The Milwaukee Brewers were expected to have a bad season and they delivered. Their offense was average and their pitching bad. As the Brewers look to turn things around, here are five free agents they must target to become competitive in the tight National League Central.
5. Geovany Soto

With the injuries to Jonathan LuCroy, the lack of depth at catcher was exposed. Martin Maldonado cannot carry a team behind the plate and LuCroy has become unreliable. Carrying a third catcher like Geovany Soto helps the pitchers and lets Maldonado and LuCroy do some pinch hitting.
4. Gordon Beckham

The third base situation in Milwaukee looks scary. Chances are that one of the young guys steps up. Even if that happens, the Brewers will need a veteran backup
3. Jeff Samardzija

The Brewers have Matt Garza and some young pitchers. What they lack is a true No. 1. Jeff Samardzija could be that.
2. Kyle Lohse

The way he pitched this year, Kyle Lohse should come back for free. On the other hand he pitched so poorly the Brewers found something out. He is okay at being a swing man, rotating between high leverage relief and occasionally starting. They should bring him back to do that.
1. Matt Albers

Matt Albers had a scoreless streak of 21.1 innings this year. He is a great seventh inning reliever. The Brewers have Blazek and Rodriguez at the back end, but need a middle reliever. Albers could be the key ingredient in taking the Brewers from the bottom of the standings back into wild card contention. We saw the impact a three-inning relief corps can have on games last year with the Kansas City Royals. Here the Brewers can replicate that.
