College Football Upset Alert: Week Two
After last week’s upsets by Baylor South Florida, it looks like it may possibly be slimmer pickings in terms of upsets for week 2, but here are a few games to keep an eye on:
Mississippi State @ Auburn
This one is simple. Last week, now 16th ranked Mississippi State slaughtered Memphis on the road 59-14, while Auburn had to pull off an amazing double-digit comeback in the last few minutes against Utah State at home. Everybody is now thinking that this game is almost a gimmie for MSU, but that would be foolish. Auburn is still the defending national champion, and don’t think that they weren’t embarrassed last week, despite the win. They are a 6 point underdog at home, and will be looking to make a statement this weekend. This game could come down to the wire.
Iowa @ Iowa State
As an Iowa fan myself, I never count this game as an automatic win for either team. You can always throw out how good or bad either team is, records, and last week’s games. When Iowa, in particular, doesn’t show up to play, they have a lot of problems, and that will once again be the key to this year’s game. Either way, at least we don’t have to see either team hoisting that hideous would-be new Cy-Hawk Trophy.
TCU @ Air Force
While the offense turned it up a notch late in the game, we saw the holes left in TCU’s defense after 6 starters graduated last year. That could pose another problem this week, as they will be trying to stop an experienced Air Force team, with senior quarterback Tim Jefferson at the helm. Air Force is coming off of a 9-4 season that includes a 6-1 home record and a win over Georgia Tech in the Independence Bowl.
South Carolina @ Georgia
This is being called a must win game for Georgia. After their loss to Boise State last Saturday, they will be desperate to avoid its first 0-2 start since 1996, especially with one loss being their first SEC game. They will welcome a South Carolina team who got off to a very slow start last week against East Carolina, but exploded when quarterback Stephen Garcia came into the game. However, the Gamecocks can ill afford to get off to another slow start this week, as they have a bit of a reputation for losing games like this. Will Georgia’s desperation and athleticism be enough to get by the stellar play of Stephen Garcia and running back Marcus Lattimore?
