College Football Upset Alert: Week Six
Our lists have done pretty well the last couple weeks, with nearly every game being an upset or a close game. Let’s see if we can keep that going this week:
Missouri @ Kansas State
Kansas State is the ranked team, but Missouri is still favored here. The Tigers have played well on offense as of late, weighing in at 11th in the country in total offense, but they will be facing a Kansas State team that has stepped up on defense this season, and already boasts wins at Miami (FL) and against now #15 Baylor last week. In order to win as expected, Missouri will have to bring their A game, and play a full 60 minutes, something they’ve struggled with in their two losses.
Air Force @ Notre Dame
Notre Dame has played better over the last few weeks, but they still have done little to impress. Air Force, on the other hand, let by veteran quarterback Tim Jefferson, has put up 98 points in their last two games, including an overtime win against rival Navy in their last game, a team that the Irish have struggled with over the past few seasons. If the Falcons fire on all cylinders and Notre Dame makes the mistakes they’ve been prone to this year, they could have some problems.
Iowa @ Penn State
Penn State has not played very well so far this season, and they now welcome an Iowa team that has not only seemed to find their stride on offense, but has won 8 of the last 9 matchups between the two teams. If the Nittany Lions, as the favorites, expect to win, they will need to force Iowa to run the ball and exploit their secondary.
Michigan @ Northwestern
There is no doubt that Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson has dazzled fans again this year, but he and the Wolverines will face a new kind of test this week. Not only will this be their first road game of the season, but they will have to go up against a Northwestern team led by one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten, Dan Persa, and a team that has quietly been getting to be a good team since Pat Fitzgerald took over as head coach. The Wildcats don’t beat themselves with turnovers, so this game will very likely come down to their ability (or lack thereof) to contain Robinson. On the other hand, Michigan will need to run the football and take as much advantage of Northwestern’s rush defense as they can.
TCU @ San Diego State
Neither of these teams has been overly impressive this year, but TCU limps in after a devastating loss to rival SMU, while San Diego State has had two weeks to prepare for this game since their loss at Michigan. Because of this, I would expect the Aztecs to come out firing from the start, but if they want to win, they will need to tighten down on defense, an area in which they have not been stellar at this season, although not dreadful either. For the Horned Frogs, they will need to shake off last week’s loss, something that will be tough to do for sure, and play a complete game.
