Anaheim Ducks sign goaltender Viktor Fasth
Word has been out for a while that the Anaheim Ducks were front runners on Swedish goaltender Viktor Fasth, but it is now reportedly a done deal. It is also reportedly a 1-way deal, which likely means he will be the Ducks back up goaltender next season. Fasth had impresive stats last season for AIK of the Sweden Elitserien League. Over 48 games Fasth had a 2.12 goals against average, and a .931 save percentage.
Now this is all speculation on my part, but besides the obvious that Dan Ellis will be gone next season. There are a few questions on what this signing means for the rest of the Goaltenders in the Ducks system. Jeff Deslauriers was on a 2-way contract this season, but next season it is a 1-way deal. If Fasth is indeed the Ducks back up goaltender next season that means that Deslauriers would be on a 1-way contract in the minors. I have a hard time believing that the Ducks will be paying Deslauriers NHL money to play in the minors, so it is my best guess that Deslauriers will be traded before next season starts.
There is also the fact that current Ducks AHL goalie Iiro Tarkki does not have a contract for next season. He did a great job for Syracuse this season. In 47 games he had a 2.51 Goals Against Average, and a .924 save percentage. It is possible, that the Ducks just don’t re-sign Tarkki, but I do not see why they would do that. Tarkki has done a great job, and in my opinion should be rewarded with a new contract.
The other goalie in the AHL for the Ducks besides Tarkki if he re-signs will Likely be Igor Bobkov. Bobkov had a good season on a bad team in Kingston of the OHL, and looks to be ready for the AHL. Goaltender John Gibson will likely return to Kitchner of the OHL for one more year.
