Syracuse Guard Dion Waiters Set to Enter 2012 NBA Draft
Charles LeClaire-US PRESSWIRE

After being eliminated by Ohio State on Saturday night, Syracuse guard Dion Waiters is reportedly set to begin the next chapter in his life: the NBA.

The news first surfaced over the weekend, and a Monday morning article in the Syracuse Post Standard added more insight into Waiters’ decision.

“I’ve decided to pursue my dream of becoming a professional basketball player by entering my name in the NBA Draft this spring. I plan on signing with an agent,” Waiters said in a statement on Monday.

Waiters decision to sign with an agent will effectively end his two-year tenure with the Orange.

Waiters, who had a sub-par freshman campaign, had given deep thought to departing from the Syracuse program last summer. However, the 6-foot-4 guard made the decision to return, making vast improvements in becoming one of college basketball’s best off-the-bench performers.

The sophomore averaged 12.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game this past year and once again showcased his premier skills this past weekend in Boston. Syracuse narrowly edged Wisconsin in the Sweet 16 round before falling to Ohio State in the Elite 8.

Waiters has played his way into a likely first round selection in this June’s upcoming NBA Draft and is currently listed as the No. 20 selection by NBADraft.net. The guard is also listed as the No. 25 prospect by Draft Express.

The Orange were hindered heading into the NCAA Tournament by the loss of center Fab Melo, and while Syracuse failed to qualify for the Final Four, their is still no doubt to the terrific season that both Waiters and the Orange had.

The loss of Waiters leaves the Syracuse back court without two of their three top contributors looking ahead to next season, the other being graduating senior Scoop Jardine.

Waiters is an original native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
