St. Mary’s Guard Matthew Dellavedova Contributes for Australians at Olympics

The closing ceremonies at the 2012 London Olympics marked the end of an exciting two weeks of international competition.

The United States took the gold medal in men’s basketball on Sunday, cementing their continued legacy in the ongoing debate and comparison against the 1992 Dream Team.

Of all the superstars that participated in men’s basketball at the Olympics it was Australian guard and current member of the San Antonio Spurs, Patty Mills who led the competition in scoring. Mills averaged 21.2 points through the Australian’s run.

While Mills is now a few years removed from his glory days at St. Mary’s, his fellow Australian teammate and current Gaels’ guard Matthew Dellavedova had an effective debut in his first career Olympics.

While the pipeline of Australian recruits continue to find their way to St. Mary’s and head coach Randy Bennett, Mills and now Dellavedova are quickly becoming the cream of the Gaels’ recruiting pitch.

Now, Bennett can add the fact that Mills led all scorers in the summer’s 2012 London Olympics, while Dellavedova, a senior-to-be, brings back a unique experience, looking to build upon an already-impressive first three years at SMC.

Dellavedova, who averaged a team-high 15.5 points per game last season, once again leads a squad that should have NCAA Tournament possibilities in 2012-13.

Over the course of the past two weeks, Dellavedova found ways to help the Australian squad, finishing the competition with a 7.3 points per game average. The 6-foot-4 guard also led the squad with a total of 27 assists.

Dellavedova is a native of Maryborough, Australia and has averaged double-figures offensively in each of his first three seasons at St. Mary’s.

The Australian team finished the 2012 London Olympics with a 3-3 overall record, falling in the quarterfinal round to the United States.
