Michael Floyd Could Make Arizona Cardinals 2012 NFL Draft Sing
Floyd worked with the color pink; he may work just as well with red, black and white.
The Arizona Cardinals have spent the majority of their offseason trying to improve their offensive line. Barring an unlikely acquisition of Buffalo Bills free agent tackle Demetrius Bell, the Cardinals will take a long look at taking an offensive lineman with their first pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
The Cardinals are sitting at No. 13 with the biggest need at the tackle position. Most draft analysts agree that three tackles – USC’s Matt Kalil, Iowa’s Riley Reiff and Stanford’s Jonathan Martin – are top-13 worthy. Stanford guard David DeCastro also is a player that would upgrade Arizona’s line.
Pink Floyd references aside, if Arizona is trying to ensure that quarterback Kevin Kolb has a chance to succeed this coming season, another player in the draft fills that need: Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd.
Floyd, who had 100 receptions for 1,147 yards and nine touchdowns last season, is a deep threat who can keep defenses from keying on superstar Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald would no doubt take the 6-foot-3 Fighting Irish wideout under his wing, and the duo would shine.
The addition of Floyd would conjure comparisons to the Fitzgerald-Anquan Boldin tandem that the Cardinals rode to Super Bowl XLIII after the 2008 season.
Yes, Floyd had three alcohol-related arrests at Notre Dame, including one in January of 2011 that nearly cost him the ’11 season. He was suspended in the offseason but fulfilled a list of requirements coach Brian Kelly demanded for his reinstatement.
Besides, the Cardinals have not drafted an offensive lineman at all since 2009. In 2007, they chose Levi Brown in the first round with the No. 5 pick overall. Two picks later, the Minnesota Vikings selected running back Adrian Peterson.
Do the Cardinals dare draft another lineman and risk making the same mistake twice?
Arizona showed some imagination by entering the Peyton Manning sweepstakes. He landed elsewhere, however, and the rest of the offseason has been as mundane as the dark side of the moon.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, also have a need at defensive end and outside linebacker. Floyd seems an extragavance, compared to the conservative offseason the team has “enjoyed.”
So which team is Arizona? Is it the team that entered the Peyton chase or is the team that showed little imagination in free agency elsewhere?
All in all, Floyd seems like a pick the Cardinals should call.
