Quarterback controversies are always something that crop up during training camp, and the Arizona Cardinals might have a budding one.

Last week, NFL Network analyst Willie McGinest stated that he had spoken with some members of the Cardinals team, and that those players indicated that they thought John Skelton was a better choice than incumbent Kevin Kolb.

Things like this drive a head coach nuts, especially one like Carindals head coach Ken Whisenhunt who likes to keep things close to the vest, and he was quick to try to squash any rumors surrounding his quarterbacks.

“From what I’ve seen, standing in the huddle, which I don’t believe he [McGinest] was in the huddle, the team’s responded to both guys,” Whisenhunt said.

Kolb is under a lot of pressure to perform based on what the Cardinals endured and paid to get him in Arizona, and that pressure just increased a little more this week, as the Cardinals released their depth chart for their opening preseason game with Kolb listed as the starting quarterback.

Situations like this aren’t uncommon, but just the fact that Skelton is being given the chance to win the starting job is a good indication the Cardinals are serious about making sure Kolb is actually the guy they went out of their way to get in 2011.

It should be – and is at this point – Kolb’s job to lose.  But should he not perform well in the pre-season, rest assured this is a topic that will grow even more when the regular season begins.
