About six months ago, Josh Collmenter was preparing to pitch another minor league season. Now, the right-hander will be pitching in a possible elimination game for the Diamondbacks in front of a national television audience of millions of people.

Kirk Gibson announced a couple of days back that Collmenter will get the nod in tonight’s Game Three against Milwaukee. Before the series against the Brewers started, it was expected that Joe Saunders was going to get the nod in this game, but Gibby decided on the starter with zero postseason experience.

Collmenter’s success against Milwaukee this season might have a bit to do with him getting the start as well. In back-to-back starts against the Brew Crew back in July, Collmenter allowed only six hits and zero runs over 14 innings. He didn’t get a decision in the first start, but grabbed one of his 10 victories on the season in the second outing.

The Michigan native’s success not only against the Brewers, but most teams over the course of the season hinged on his ability to throw strikes. Collmenter doesn’t have electric stuff like some are blessed with, but he does a great job getting ahead of hitters and mixing up his pitches. With the way Milwaukee has hit in these first two games, he will need to continue doing that tonight.

It is truly remarkable that Collmenter will be making tonight’s start. He would be the first to tell you that never in his wildest dreams he expected to be pitching in Game Three of the NLDS this season with his team’s season on the line. Hopefully he is up to the big challenge or Arizona’s magical season could draw to a close.
