The Arizona Diamondbacks made a slick move Saturday by acquiring infielder Josh Bell from the Baltimore Orioles, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. This coming after the Orioles designated Bell for assignment earlier in the week. The Diamondbacks will send a player to be named later.

Bell was part of the 2009 non-waiver trade deadline deal that sent former Orioles closer George Sherrill to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bell was considered to be a top prospect within the Dodgers system and Sherrill was a budding closer at the time coming off a season where he saved 31 games.

However, both players never actually panned out the way either team would have liked. Sherrill quickly crawled back into oblivion bouncing around from the Dodgers to the Atlanta Braves and then to the Seattle Mariners. Bell played two seasons with Baltimore batting at the Mendoza line .200/.221/.264. A very poor slash line for a once highly-regarded prospect.

Bell hopes to get a fresh start with the Diamondbacks. He could possibly join an infield that includes Willie Bloomquist, Aaron Hill and Ryan Roberts. With the way Bell has played in recent memory, it is very unlikely that he will make any kind of impact on the team and may just play out the rest of his career in the minors.

Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com says that Arizona was one of four teams interested in Bell back in the 2005 MLB Draft. Bell will be assigned to Triple-A Reno upon his arrival to the Diamondbacks organization.
