Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez May Retire Due to Lockout

With the current lockout, many NFL players are unsure what they will do if there’s no 2011 season. As for Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez, he may have no other choice but to retire and call it a career after 14 seasons.

Gonzalez recently told the Sporting News he would consider retirement if the lockout forces the 2011 season since it would be difficult for him to sit out the entire year and return to the field in 2012. At 35, Gonzalez has already hinted at retirement before and is most likely heading into his final NFL season in 2011–so it would be difficult to sit out an entire year at his age.

“Would I sit out a whole season and come back — probably not, honestly,” Gonzalez said in an interview with the Sporting News. “At this point, at my age, I don’t know if that would be smart of me to do something like that. But I’m enjoying the offseason, working out and preparing like I always do.”

Gonzalez indicated back in January that he would be back next year for his 15th NFL season (third with Falcons). It’s no argument that Gonzalez is one of the greatest pass-catching tight ends of all-time and the Falcons would love to have him for at least one more season as they look to make another strong run at the Super Bowl.

Unfortunately, it may be out of their hands as Gonzalez’s future could be determined by what happens with the lockout over the next few months.
