Orioles invite Galarraga and Paulino to Spring Training
The Baltimore Orioles have agreed to minor league deals with free agents pitcher Armando Galarraga and catcher Ronny Paulino and invited them to Spring Training. Galarraga, a 30 year old right-hander, is best known for throwing a near perfect game for the Tigers in 2010. Galarraga’s chance at baseball immortality ended one out short when umpire Jim Joyce blew a call at first base. Galarraga was dealt to the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to the 2011 season. He struggled mightily in the desert going 3-4 with a 5.91 ERA in just 8 starts before being demoted to the minors. Galarraga has an outside chance to make Baltimore’s rotation in the spring. The Orioles had baseball’s worst pitching staff in 2011 and have done little to improve their mound fortunes this off-season.
Paulino hit .268 with 2 home runs and 19 RBI for the Mets in 2011. He will battle with Taylor Teagarden for the right to back up All Star Matt Wieters.
