Orioles interested in Nick Johnson
The Baltimore Orioles are reportedly interested in signing former Major League first baseman Nick Johnson to a minor league contract. Johnson was at one time the top prospect in the Yankees farm system. He never reached the lofty expectations of others but did have several solid seasons for the Washington Nationals. Johnson has battled injuries throughout his career. He missed all of the 2007 season and hasn’t appeared in the Majors since 2010 when he played 24 games with the Yankees. Johnson played in the Indians farm system in 2011 compiling a .648 OPS with 6 home runs in 53 games between Double A and Triple A. Johnson in a career .270 hitter in 794 big league games. Johnson could compete for playing time at first base and designated hitter in Baltimore, assuming he is fully healthy. His career OBP of .401 would provide a much needed dimension to the Orioles lineup. Johnson is a low-risk, low-cost signing who could surprise in Spring Training and earn a spot on the team.
