Source indicates Ravens will cut running back Willis McGahee
The Baltimore Ravens contain one of the best three-headed monsters in the NFL at running back, but according to Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun, one of those backs will not be back in 2011–Willis McGahee.
Preston indicated on Monday that the Ravens have decided not to bring McGahee back next season–mainly because of money. McGahee is expected to make $6 million in base salary next season and in Baltimore’s eyes–that’s just too expensive for a backup running back.
Ray Rice is clearly the top running back on the Ravens’ offense as he’s recorded over 3,700 yards from the line of scrimmage the past two seasons. In 2010, McGahee finished with 380 rushing yards with five touchdowns–the lowest numbers of his seven-year career. However, the loss of McGahee will be huge in the running game considering how much pressure he took off Rice.
While he’s proven to be an effective goal-line running back, this is the right move for Baltimore considering how much money they would have invested in McGahee as a backup. Preston also mentioned how the Ravens could lose fullback Le’Ron McClain to free agency during the offseason–which means Rice could be the only running back remaining from the three-headed monster next season.
