13 Seasons and No Rose Bowls for Kirk Ferentz, Hawkeyes
Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE
Friday night’s loss in the Insight Bowl to Oklahoma, marks the end of the 13th year of Kirk Ferentz’s coaching tenure and the 21st year in a row without a trip to Pasadena, CA. The Rose Bowl is “the bowl” for a Big Ten team, and especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. Let’s be honest, their chances of making to the National Championship game each year are not great. Winning the Big Ten and getting to the Rose Bowl is THE goal for Iowa. Now was this the year everyone thought they would get there? No, it wasn’t. Iowa was lucky to get a date with 14th ranked Oklahoma down in Tempe. But if you recall, Iowa had Michigan State coming to town in November and they controlled their own destiny to make the Big Ten title game. What happened is that they dropped two of their last three and got a good bowl draw due to their great fan base.

I’m personally tired of not getting to the Rose Bowl. Yes I know Iowa has been to 2 Orange Bowls. But seriously it’s been 13 years now. Kirk is 0-13 in even making it to the Rose Bowl. It sure seems like they have enough talent to get their. Iowa has 34 guys in the NFL currently, which puts them in the top ten in that category out of all Division I schools. They have the guys to do it, at some point you have to start pointing fingers. Ferentz and his coaching staff are the common denominator in all of this. Iowa plays conservatively on both sides of the ball. Their goal is always to out execute other teams, but the reality is that there aren’t many seasons where you have the talent to play that way. Other teams know what they’re going to do, and Kirk is okay with that, but guess what Kirk, it’s not working. At some point you have to mix it up a bit.

I’m not asking for Ferentz to lose his job, I’m not asking for Iowa to run a spread-option offense, but  just for them to do something different. Iowa has a perfect opportunity with an open spot at defensive coordinator to add some new blood to the program. This is a chance to re-brand themselves. We need someone that will bring an attitude to the team.  James Vandenburg has the makings of an NFL prospect. He can throw it all over the place, he will be the Hawkeyes biggest returning weapon next year, and they better use him.

Iowa must be careful to not lose sight of what got them to this place. Iowa is a team that comes out to take care of business, and you know they’ll be ready to play. For the most part they are a top-tier program in Division I football. Most of the credit goes to Kirk Ferentz for that. But with Urban Meyer taking the reigns at Ohio State, it’s time to get better in Iowa City or they may never see the sunny skies of Pasadena.
