If you’re flipping through the channels on September 8th looking to watch Iowa’s annual Cy-Hawk showdown with Iowa State, you may have to slow down for a second as it’s likely you won’t recognize one of the teams on the field.

That’s because Iowa announced it was going to wear throwback uniforms against the Cyclones to honor the 1921 and 1922 Iowa teams that won two Big Ten titles finishing 7-0 in both years.  Yep, I remember it like it was yesterday.

It will be the third time in the school’s history that Iowa had donned throwback uniforms having done so in both 2010 and 2004.  It’ll be the first time, however, they’ve changed the uni’s for the game against their instate rival.

There’s been no official word from Iowa State on their planned uniforms for the game.  There have been rumors, however, swirling around the interwebs that ISU would wear throwback uniforms at some point in the future.  While there’s been zero confirmation from anyone at Iowa State to this point, why not make it a throwback party?

The 2012 game will mark the first in the series with the new Cy-Hawk trophy going to the winner.  After last year’s disaster surrounding a post-game trophy that most of the country knows nothing about, the new trophy has been put up for a vote with the results being announced sometime in early May.

The Cyclones won last year’s game in triple overtime, 44-41, their first victory in the last four tries against the Hawkeyes.  They also hauled home the broken “interim” Cy-Hawk trophy which will be replaced by the new version this fall.

Iowa leads the all-time series with the Cyclones with an overall record of 39-20.
