Chuck Neinas Exits Big 12 July 1st

Interim Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas successfully kept Texas from joining the AFC South, Oklahoma from holding Larry Scott hostage, Baylor from suing the Vatican and now intends to vacate his post by the end of June.

The Big 12 plans to have his replacement by July 1st according to ESPN.

A search committee, those mysterious groupings of elderly administrators bantering about ideas on dry-erase boards, has formed and is being led by Oklahoma State president Burns Hargis.

And slyly, Neinas slipped in the truth that the conference has hired a search firm.

If you’ll recall, the interim commissioner ran one of the more lucrative search firms, Neinas Sports Services, prior to succeeding Dan Beebe.

His tenure will have lasted less than a year. He joined the conference in September 2011, in the midst of Texas A&M and Missouri leaving for the SEC and then negotiated the additions of TCU and West Virginia a month later.

It’s hard to call the short reign of Neinas anything but a success. Conference members committed to a six-year grants right deal, meaning the Big 12 will exist, at minimum, until late in this decade.

After the previous two summers of realignment, that’s a miracle.
