Former Kansas QB Set to Join Colorado
John Rieger-US PRESSWIRE

It appears former Kansas quarterback, Jordan Webb, may have found himself a new home.  After considering Wisconsin along with smaller schools North Texas and Murray State, Webb is reportedly set to finish out his career with the Colorado Buffaloes.

Webb has already spent time in Boulder this spring checking out what the Buffaloes had to offer and he apparently liked what he saw.

Webb will graduate from Kansas in May and then join Colorado for summer workouts.  He will be eligible to play immediately with two years of eligibility remaining.

Can Webb earn the starting job with the Buffs this fall?  Well, he likely wouldn’t be going there if he didn’t think he had a decent chance.  One of his main motivations for leaving Kansas after Charlie Weis’ arrival was “because I want playing time or at least an opportunity for it.”

On the positive side for Webb, he has what the other contenders for the starting job don’t; actual game experience.  The downside for KU’s former starting QB is that’s it’s not an easy chore to win a starting quarterback job in such a short amount of time.  Webb’s first official practice with the team won’t come until fall camp although he will have the summer workouts to help learn CU’s offense.

Webb will join the quarterback battle between Texas transfer, Connor Wood, and sophomore Nick Hirschman.  Wood has been getting all the first team reps thus far in spring practice due to the broken foot Hirschman suffered just prior to the start of spring practice.  Hirschman is expected to be healed and ready to go for fall camp.

With Webb now joining the fray, head coach Jon Embree and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will have their hands full dolling out reps in practice.  The longer the quarterback battle continues into the fall, the fewer reps the eventual starter will receive in practice.  In other words, the sooner the Buffs can reach a decision, the better it’ll be for the offense as a whole and that is something that could work against Webb in his quest for playing time.

If you were to handicap the race at this point, Wood has to have the obvious edge since he’s getting all the reps this spring.  How much heat Hirschman and Webb can put on Webb this fall remains to be seen, but from the sounds of, the duo will at least get their shot.

At a minimum, Webb should provide a nice security blanket for the Buffs.  With so much inexperience at such a crucial position, having a guy with Webb’s experience on the roster should help Embree sleep just a little bit better when the season finally rolls around.
