Big East Player to Watch: Otto Porter, Georgetown
Evan Habeeb-US PRESSWIRE

The general consensus around Georgetown and the Big East is that sophomore Otto Porter should break out in 2012-13. With the departures of Henry Sims, Jason Clark and Hollis Thompson, Porter is the Hoyas’ top returning scorer and he’ll need to step up to fill the trio’s void.

But even if those players still suited up for John Thompson III, Porter would be a candidate for a huge season as indicated by his play down the stretch of 2011-12. Porter averaged 15.6 points during his last five games, upping his season average to 9.7.

A do-it-all guy, Porter can score in the paint or from mid-range. He is a very solid defender, and for a three, he is an above average passer.

Porter’s NBA stock has already been set pretty high with NBADraft.net pitting him at No. 7 in the 2013 draft. As a result, there has been some speculation about his future at Georgetown. ESPN’s Joe Kaiser wrote this about the rising sophomore:

“Porter’s numbers are expected to jump from year one to year two, and with a pro’s type of game and prototypical size for a NBA small forward, one has to seriously wonder if this could be his final season with the Hoyas.”

Expect big things from Porter in 2012-13.
