Update: News is surfacing that according to the official police report, controlled substances were found at the residence in El Reno and Box may have died of an overdose. This is alleged and still pending an autopsy.
A 911 call has also been released by the Tulsa World which includes J.T. Cobble, Box’s friend, speaking to an operator and declaring Box had taken pain pills and was unresponsive.
According to several reports this afternoon, Oklahoma Sooners senior linebacker Austin Box has died after being hospitalized in Oklahoma City for a yet to be determined medical issue.
Box was found unconscious in a home in El Reno, Oklahoma earlier this morning and was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City where he was later pronounced dead.
Box started the last five games of his junior season at linebacker for Oklahoma and was slated to start there during the 2012 season.
This is sad news for the Oklahoma Sooners and another unfortunate passing of a young football player in his prime.
