Winnipeg NHL franchise chooses Jets moniker

By Kris Hughes

According to several media reports which have surfaced last evening and during the course of the day today, the newly minted Winnipeg NHL franchise has chosen the name Jets.

Open voting from people in the Winnipeg community was started by the team’s new ownership group, True North Sports & Entertainment, but of the options the Jets moniker was by far the favorite.

The previous NHL franchise that moved to Phoenix, Arizona to become the Coyotes in 1996 was called the Jets and the name still holds a strong place in the hearts of hockey fans in Winnipeg and the surrounding area.

The NHL entry draft takes place this evening and a formal announcement is expected to be made by True North at that time regarding the name.

It will be interesting to see if the Jets go with a throwback design for their first uniform, or will come up with a new design scheme reflective of today’s NHL. Either way, they have a great brand and logo to use to draw NHL fans’ attention back to Canada again for the 2011-2012 season.
