Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.
Former Texas Longhorns and current Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson has been arrested for assault in Austin, Texas and is currently being held in the Travis County jail pending formal charges.
According to YNN’s Ricky Doyle, the alleged incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in Austin:
This arrest marks Benson’s fourth arrest during this NFL career, two for assault, one for a drunken driving charge in Austin, and another for a Boating While Intoxicated (BWI) charge on Lake Travis in the Austin area.
Soon, the Cincinnati Bengals are going to have to decide whether their investment in Benson is going to be worth the constant off-the-field issues they have to deal with in order to have him on the roster. He has improved consistently over the past few seasons in terms of production on the field, but his personal life is still mired in turmoil.
The facts are that there appear to be greater demons at work in Cedric Benson’s life–regardless of his talent–that simply will not allow him to get back on his feet and stay clean away from the gridiron.
There will always be a team willing to take a chance on the former UT star because of his talent, but talent can’t keep you out of jail and in trouble with the law.
This is something that Cedric Benson will have to work through himself with the help of someone who realizes that there is pattern in his behavior which won’t be cured by the cheers on Sunday afternoon or the money and lifestyle being a professional football player affords a young guy from Midland, Texas.
