With the NBA lockout showing no signs of slowing down, many players are considering playing overseas. If you are Delonte West, you can’t do that. A wide array of legal problems is keeping him in the country. So Delonte did what every American looking for a job would do. He filled out an application for Home Depot.
Don’t believe me? Here’s the report from CBS Sports. Although West has made millions in his career, a lot of players do live paycheck to paycheck. Right now, there are no NBA paychecks to be seen. West, like most people, has bills to pay. He needs income from somewhere. I’m not sure I can actually wrap my head around him working at Home Depot, but more power to him.
West represents a key group of players whom the lockout centers around. If the lockout forces players to find other lines of work, it could make the players seek a lesser deal to get back to playing. However, if the players make a living working odd jobs, they can continue to hold out for a better deal. West is currently a free agent, so he doesn’t have the guarantee of returning to a contract like most players.
No matter the outcome of West’s job hunt, I think its safe to say that this might be the craziest story of the lockout yet. Unless you think a kid from Taiwan dunking on Lebron is better, but that’s a whole new story for a new day. Delonte, if you get the job and are reading this, hook me up with a discount. You never know when power tools will come in handy.
