There is no denying his popularity and his polarization. Tim Tebow has been the touted the most popular athlete in America by ESPN, joining Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Kobe Bryant, and Lebron James as the sixth athlete to be ranked on top since 2007 in their monthly poll. We’ve all had conversations about the most talked about quarterback in the NFL, and usually it winds up as a debate instead of a conversation. So what makes this guy so special? Like it or not, he is the new face of America. Forget those Uncle Sam “We Want You” posters. The grey haired icon has been replaced by a 24 year old quarterback who has the potential to dwarf Michael Jordan as the most marketable current athlete in history. I say current since Jordan’s staying power after retirement is likely to never be duplicated and football players tend to fade in terms of marketability after retirement. Still, all bets are off with Tebow as he continues to find success against the odds. So why is he the most famous athlete on the planet? Because he is a reflection of this country and our trends. Here is my Tebow equation. Christian + Capitalism + NFL= The #1 Person/Product ever imagined.

A CHRISTIAN NATION: Based on most surveys, America consists of 70%-78% Christian followers. Christians also make up 33% of the world’s population, the biggest such following on the planet. Tebow has not been shy about his beliefs, but he has not been quick to push it on others either. He believes he should lead by example and has been very humble in his talents and successes. His approach to his faith makes him accommodating to both sides of the isle. If you share his faith then it is obviously easy to associate yourself with him. If you don’t, the fact he has a strong conviction but is not pushy allows you to disagree but still associate yourself with the aspects of his game or persona that are agreeable.

CAPITALISM: The Private and Corporate sector are here to generate revenue through the sale of their products. Nothing drives a product like a celebrity which people identify with. Red Rock Cola started out with Babe Ruth and the sales tactic has been a mainstay ever since. It’s estimated that 75% of all basketball shoes in the United States sold are from the Jordan brand. While those two athletes successes were based on their icon status, neither was so agreeable to 70%-78% of the demographic based on religion alone. Corps love market share, polls, and demographic numbers. Tebow is probably the most used Power Point presentation in every ad agency’s boardroom. His run into the playoffs and success despite his limitations have made him the idol of every blue collar family. For every kid that lacks the natural talent or grace in athletic performance, Tebow represents the grind it out mentality and belief success is possible. He is the turtle against the hare. He is exactly what the spending middle class can relate to.

THE NFL: As if the previous two parts of the equation weren’t enough, Tim Tebow also has the good fortune of playing on America’s favorite sports platform. The NFL is the most watched and lucrative sport in the country. NFL  television and advertisement revenues dwarf that of other sports, making football a launching pad for athletes to become household names. The NFL has mastered marketing techniques and is slowly expanding into a global brand. Tebow could not have chosen a better path en route to becoming not only a domestic but global celebrity.

No matter where you stand on Tim Tebow, the above is hard to ignore. We have not even seen the first wave of products and endorsement to hit shelves but people are clamoring for everything Tebow. Bottom line, he is good for the league and has started a conversation not likely to end any time soon.

One Rant to “The Tim Tebow Equation”

  1. Charles Hubbard says:

God had me let Tim Tebow know that he was to end support of the company named in honor of the pagan goddess NIKE… because it dishonors the Name of the Most High God!

God has given me a special spiritual gift. If I have a question about something concerning His will… He leads me to go to His Word… open it without looking… put down a pen without looking… to get His answer for me.

Many months ago a friend of mine was rushing out the door and simply said she had to grab her NIKE’s and put them on. I then told her about NIKE and that she needed to throw them out. (I threw out about 6-7 things myself) After I got off the phone with her… I asked God if He approved what I had told her. God led me to go to His Word… open it without looking… put down a pen without looking… to get His answer for me. It was touching 2 words “goodness” “pleases”.

Just a short while ago… after all the NIKE things were out of my girlfriends house… one thing remained… A poster with Sam Bradford. There were several NIKE logos on the poster… and since I know that NIKE is evil… I took white-out and covered up the logos on the poster. (It looks great not seeing them) After I had done that… out of respect for God… I asked if He approved of that.

God led me to go to His Word… open it without looking… put down a pen without looking… to get His answer for me. It was touching 1 word “good”.

You may wonder why I am so persistent in sharing this… It is because God has given me a gift and there is NO DOUBT in my mind that God hates it. And if you don’t believe me or the gift I have where God has revealed hundreds of things to me… then at least believe His Word… for you will find just how much He hates other gods.
