At the Cubs Convention this past weekend, my father and I had a nice conversation with the Chicago Cubs President of Business Operations Crain Kenney. During our conversation, Kenney said that when he spoke with Theo Epstein in June, he told Epstein that he’d have all the money he needed to run the Chicago Cubs the right way…

So if I heard him correctly, the Chicago Cubs were in contact with Epstein as far back as June of last season. I always has my suspicions that this was a deal that was worked out long before all of the drama, but this very well may have confirmed it. So does this mean that the Chicago Cubs tampered with another team’s management? Can the Red Sox seek damages from the Chicago Cubs? When was this deal worked out?

Don’t get me wrong, I am glad the Cubs had their sites set high with Epstein. Hiring him was the biggest thing this franchise has done since winning the World Series in 1908. Epstein is a proven winner and brings an outsider’s perspective to the Cubs. Tom Ricketts and Kenney should get a world of credit for this move. It’s not business as usual with the Chicago Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs are certainly headed in the right direction based on my observations at the Cubs Convention. I’ve been to these events in the past, but for the first time the message was clear that the Chicago Cubs plan on being the elite franchise in baseball. From building the Dominican Republic’s top baseball facility to demanding world-class spring training facilities in Arizona, it’s finally starting to come together. Epstein was the final piece. I’m glad to see the Cubs acting like big boys.

It’s a wonderful time to be a Chicago Cubs fan. For the first time in my 37-years on this planet, I finally believe that the Cubs will be the best team in the National League within three years and win a World Series within five. Put that in your pipe and smoke it…
