Brian Johnson Named Utah Offensive Coordinator. He’s 24.
Brian Johnson, the quarterbacks coach at Utah for the past two seasons, earned a promotion to offensive coordinator while simultaneously making you feel bad about your own career prospects.
The former Utes quarterback is only 24 and now one step away from a head coaching job.
His car insurance rate probably hasn’t dropped yet but his employer saw fit to give him the responsibility of coordinating an offense in the Pac 12.
Sara Ganim, the young crime reporter at the Patriot-News who is owning the Penn State story and likely headed national soon, thinks Johnson’s rise is dramatic.
As recently as 2009, he was starring under center for the Utes and eviscerating a Nick Saban defense in the Sugar Bowl. Utah thumped Alabama 31-17 behind 336 yards and 3 touchdowns from the winningest quarterback in school history.
Immediately following a failed stint in the UFL, Johnson joined the Utah staff and with Norm Chow’s defection to Hawaii, Kyle Whittingham decided to roll the dice with his precocious pupil.
Should the Utes experience almost any success on offense, it wouldn’t surprise me to see a Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West or Sun Belt school tab him for another promotion.
Johnson’s stock is steadily climbing and if Pac 12 commissioner Larry Scott isn’t careful, his own job might be in peril.
