Video: NCAA National Champions In Trouble Of Making A Repeat
The University of Connecticut Men’s Basketball Team, the 2011 NCAA National Champions, are in a position that no one would have imagined. This past Monday, on National Television, the Huskies got embarrassed by Louisville 80-59. In the last 10 games, the Huskies are 3-7, losing at home twice. Their record right now is currently 15-8 overall and 5-6 in conference play. Two major contributors from last year’s championship team that have done everything but disappoint this season is Alex Oriakhi and Roscoe Smith. Oriakhi is averaging 6.6 points and 5 rebounds a game, where last year he was averaging nearly a double double. Roscoe Smith is averaging 3.6 points and 3.3 rebounds a game, when last year those stats were doubled.
The problem facing the Connecticut Huskies is their remaining schedule. They have to play #2 Syracuse twice, at Villanova, #18 Marquette, at Providence, and Pittsburgh. You are looking at a legit four losses if they don’t come to play before the Big East Tournament where anything can happen. The biggest problem is the loss of Kemba Walker from last year’s team. If you think losing only one player from a team wouldn’t be an issue, think again. The loss of 23.5 points a game, first team All-American, NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player, National Champion Kemba Walker is bigger than people would have imagined. It’s not all the accolades and points from Kemba that they are missing, but it is his leadership. Connecticut is one of the most talented teams in America with no true leader. They are young and not disciplined right now, which is showing late in games and on the road. Connecticut has an opportunity this Saturday at #2 Syracuse to be put back on the College Basketball map.
