Los Angeles Lakers legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson was a larger-than-life character who seemed infallible and untouchable, as he, along with Larry Bird, helped to save the NBA from troubled times during the 1980s.

Magic’s ability to take control of a game at his whim, and make plays which were once thought impossible for a man of his size, changed the way that we look at the role of the “point-forward” in modern-day professional basketball.

Prior to November 7, 1991, Magic was on top of the world.

On November 7, 1991, everything changed.

ESPN has produced a documentary, titled “The Announcement”,  about  Johnson’s November 7, 1991 press conference at the Lakers star disclosed his contraction of the AIDS virus.

The documentary will first air on ESPN on March 11, 2012.

If ESPN’s “30 for 30″ series is any indication of the production and story-telling quality of the documentary, it should be first-class.

Magic’s announcement was one of the most heartfelt and gripping moments in modern professional sports history. A man that once seemed above it all showed us just how vulnerable and human he was on the largest stage imaginable.

The stated goal for this documentary is to both remind people of the emotion of the time and what it meant for the NBA, but also that Magic is still fighting the disease to this day and enduring the struggle, in spite of his apparent health and well-being.

It will be fascinating to see the details of a story which many of us only know by what we saw on that fateful day.
