Virginia Commonwealth seems to be cooking up a championship run again this season and it his a definite possibility with the Rams defeating Drexel 59-56 to win the Colonial Athletic Association championship.
VCU will try to head back to the Final Four after making a magical run last year as an at-large bid.
None of it would have been possible without some key free throws in the final 19 seconds of the game from the Rams’ Troy Daniels. Daniels would make four free throws to hang on against the Dragons, who were the top seed in the CAA tournament.
The Rams were also able to force 18 Drexel turnovers and turn those turnovers into 18 points. They only averaged 11 turnovers coming into the final.
The question for Drexel remains if they’re an at-large bid coming into Selection Sunday. The Dragons are 27-6 on the season and only have two losses to CAA opponents. They also came into the game vs. VCU on a 19-game winning streak.
Against the RPI Top 50, they are 1-2 and have a bad schedule making a case against them. It will be up to the committee though come Selection Sunday.
