Dwight Howard Signifies the Selfishness of the NBA

After watching the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwight Howard hold their respective teams hostage and demand trades to big-market teams, it has become evident that the NBA has become a selfish league.

When players dictate the strength of the league, the direction of an organization and put a stranglehold on a team for their own benefit, this signifies a league that has lost its way.

Lebron James has taken a beating in the media for the way he handled his departure from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Say what you will about Lebron, but he at least finished his contract with the team that drafted him. He should have handled his departure differently, but at least he didn’t demand the team trade him. He left in a more respectable way by waiting until he hit free-agency.

What Dwight Howard has done to the Orlando Magic is heart-breaking. The Magic has the third best team in the Eastern Conference. They have overcome distraction after distraction to play respectable basketball.

The drama, for now, seems to be over. Howard will not opt out of his contract and will stay with the team through next season.

Can the Magic move forward and make a run with Howard still the focal point of the team? I am sure that I am not alone in not expecting this.

What should the Magic do after the season concludes? I believe they should try to unload Howard and seek players that want to play and are happy playing the game they grew up loving.

Unfortunately, those players don’t get the headlines. Maybe Orlando can build a team around the right type of players now.
