Royce White Leads Iowa State Past UConn

By Marian Hinton

Earlier this week, Rant Sports declared that Iowa State’s Royce White would one of the ten players to keep an eye on in this year’s NCAA Tournament. In their first match-up of this year’s tourney against UConn, the sophomore forward certainly lived up to the billing.

White, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, led the Cyclones this season in all five statistical categories: points, rebounds, steals, assists, and blocks. And it was White, once again, that led Iowa State to victory over the Huskies in their opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Hitting 60% from the floor, White scored 15 points and added 12 rebounds and two assists. However, he wasn’t the only Cyclone with a big night. Senior guard, Chris Allen, was the team’s high scorer with 20 points, hitting 50% from the floor and 100% from behind the charity stripe. Fellow senior guard, Scott Christopherson added 15 points of his own.

Iowa State led by as many as 22 points early before the Huskies narrowed the lead in the second half. The Cyclones kept control throughout, however, defeating UConn by a score of 77-64.

Next, the Cyclones will have their hands full as they take on the No. 1 overall seed, the Kentucky Wildcats.
