MLB Rumors have run rampant for the Los Angeles Angels. The name people are talking more and more about is Josh Johnson of the Miami Marlins involving a package around Peter Bourjos. I would be stunned if the Marlins dumped Johnson if Peter Bourjos is the best player coming back because Johnson is one of the premiere names on the block with the talent to back up his name.
The Marlins had visions of a World Series championship after their spending spree in the offseason, but nothing has worked out according to plan. They struggled mightily in the first half and just traded Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers for Jacob Turner and other prospects. Josh Johnson could be next, but I think it would be crazy to send him to the Angels.
The Angels don’t have the quality young talent in the system other teams have so I don’t know if these two teams match up. I think the Marlins are a little desperate but don’t need to be with Johnson because he’s under team control through 2013. If they’re going to trade Johnson, it makes more sense to hold him until the winter, but that’s just me.
If the Angels did land Johnson, it would be a huge and awesome deal for them as it would give them the best rotation in baseball. It also could mean the Texas Rangers would over extend themselves and trade for Zack Greinke of the Milwaukee Brewers, Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies, or Matt Garza of the Chicago Cubs.
We’ll see what happens as this rumor will either heat up considerably or cool off in the next 48 hours or so, but this could get very interesting very fast.
