San Francisco Giants vs. Washington Nationals: Predicting the Final Score of NLDS Game 1

FAIL!
Washington Nationals

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

After Wednesday night’s 8-0 win for the San Francisco Giants over the Pittsburgh Pirates, the final eight are finally set. For their prize, the Giants get to head to Washington to take on the Washington Nationals in the NLDS.

The Giants will be calling on Jake Peavy for Game 1 on Friday afternoon. Peavy has been in three previous postseason runs, and he is 0-3 with a 9.27 ERA. While they aren’t flattering numbers for the righty, San Francisco acquired him for this exact reason. Since that trade, he has been outstanding for the Giants, going 6-4 with a 2.12 ERA.

The Giants’ offense will need to be on point in Game 1. In the play-in game against the Pirates, the Giants’ offense appeared patient, and they put a premium on getting on base against Edinson Volquez. Getting on base puts pressure on the entire team, from the pitchers to the defense. They were average in that regard in the regular season, but they must continue to put a premium on on-base percentage, especially going up against the Nationals’ pitching staff, a unit that is probably the strongest part of the Washington team.

A starter has not yet been named for the Nationals, but they have three great options. First is Doug Fister. Fister was probably their best overall pitcher this season, finishing the year 16-6 with a 2.41 ERA. He has been rather effective in his postseason career, so I would imagine that he would be odds-on favorite to get the ball on Friday. If the Nationals decide to go another direction, they have Jordan Zimmermann and Stephen Strasburg who they can turn to. That’s a pretty good situation for the Nationals heading into the NLDS.

The offense hasn’t exactly been on fire the past month of the season, so the Nationals could be had by Peavy; but I don’t see it happening in Game 1. I think Fister gets the ball and he dominates as he did the majority of the season.

Game 1 Prediction: Washington 4  San Francisco 2
