The Miami Dolphins have picked up former Houston Texans RB Steve Slaton off waivers on Thursday.

Slaton was a 1,000 yard back as a rookie in 2008, but has seen himself fall on the depth chart behind Pro Bowler Arian Foster and newcomer Ben Tate.

Slaton was the No. 89 pick out of West Virginia, but has been said to have not fully recovered from a neck injury. He was cut by Houston on Tuesday.

The move doesn’t figure to take away touches from rookie Daniel Thomas, or according to multiple sources, Reggie Bush. Slaton is the second vet to be signed by Miami in the last month.

Larry Johnson was brought in by the Dolphins last month, but cut twice since.

Defensive lineman Ryan Baker was cut to make room for Slaton.

Yep, Jason Taylor was sticking up for his QB this week. Talking about Mark Sanchez, Taylor said to NBC Miami, “I don’t think he’s as talented as Chad Henne.”

This coming nearly a year after Taylor said that Sanchez is his QB, while they were teammates.

I get the sticking up for your teammate thing. I don’t think Sanchez is all that great yet either.

But the youngster has enjoyed a couple of late-running seasons, unlike Henne.

But let’s face it, through three weeks it’s hard to find a QB that Henne is better than. Seriously, ask yourself this question: Would you rather have Henne than…..

1. Sanchez

2. Rex Grossman

3. Kyle Orton

4. Tim Tebow

5. Matt Hasselback

6. Tavaris Jackson

7. Alex Smith

8. Kerry Collins

9. Jason Campbell

10. Matt Moore

Henne is playing at the level of a bottom-10 QB in the NFL right now. Actually, he did last year too, but showed signs at times. There has not been one point through three games where I was confident of Miami scoring inside the redzone.

Then at the end of the game – with CBS showing that Miami needed just six yards to get into possible Dan Carpenter field goal range – this happened.

First down-incompletion. Second down-incompletion. Third down-incompletion. Fourth down-interception.

Against the Cleveland Browns. With plenty of time. He may not be the only problem (looking at you Miami secondary) but he is the most glaring.

Have to admit, it is fun to see the few rare celebs that aren’t Red Sox or Yankees fans, but rather, fans of the Miami Dolphins.

Daniel Tosh has showed his support since the early days of Tosh.O, when he enjoyed ripping all that is Nick Saban. In last night’s episode he was at it again, all while wearing a Hurricanes t-shirt.

Tosh echoed mine and many other Dolphins’ fans feelings when he wondered if a man puking from a hangover was actually flying over <del>Joe Robbie, Pro Player, Dolphins Stadium, Land Shark</del>, Sun Life Stadium.

The reason for the release – the QB play in Miami. It’s hard to argue with.

Chad Henne looked decent through about 35 minutes of the season opener with the Pats. Yes, the numbers were big, but in a sign of things to come, multiple deep trips inside New England territory were killed.

Against the Texans – same thing. Last Sunday against the Browns – same thing.

The trading deadline is coming up and if Miami doesn’t want to be included in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, it’s time to act now. Henne can not get it done.

The ‘Fins are 0-3, Sparano is on the hot seat and the O is again nowhere to be seen. A change needs to happen asap.

Up next is the Chargers, then there is a Monday night game against the Jets down the road. Things could get very ugly, very fast.

That was ugly. Embarrassing. Down right disappointing.

On national television, the Miami Dolphins let Tom Brady and the rival Pats run wild on a record setting night.

Here’s this week’s highlights and lowlights:

Highlights – The Dolphins offense under new coordinator Brian Daboll looked, well, impressive. Chad Henne killed the ‘Fins not once, but twice. He did make some good throws, and found Reggie Bush probably as much as he was supposed to. But two deep drives led to just three points. An inside rushing game and accuracy deep are key. Why did Henne not throw a fade, but rather two straight curl routes, to Brandon Marshall. He made a great jump catch earlier in the game. I am trying to pick up Reggie Bush in my fantasy leagues. He is getting fed in 2011.

Lowlights – Miami might as well have let Northwest Dade High suit up on defense, cause nobody else did. Cameron Wake got a huge sack at the end of the first half, but he was owned by a rookie for a majority of the game. Jason Taylor, Koa Misi and Karlos Dansby were supposed to help Wake out, but they were no-shows. Sean Smith, Vontae Davis and Reshad Jones were running all over the field chasing Patriots. Nolan—don’t even get me started on the nickel back. That should be a transaction made right now. The secondary was awful, and plays the Texans this week.

No better way to kick off the regular season than a nationally televised game against one of the league’s powerhouses of the past decade.

That is, unless, you have about 100 questions surrounding your team. Well, the Dolphins do.

From RB, where Larry Johnson was cut, then brought back, and at nearly every other position, the Dolphins will be answering questions tonight against the Patriots.

Can Reggie Bush be a feature back? He looked good in the preseason, and of course before he hit NFL fields, but he has some years on the treads now. Daniel Thomas isn’t ready yet, so Bush better be.

Can Chad Henne prove the world wrong? One of the best QB’s during the preseason, Henne still has a lot to prove. His career, and his head coach’s, ride on Henne coming out strong.

Will Brandon Marshall break through this year? He was great in Denver, but didn’t shine quite as bright last year. With Henne in survival mode, will B-Marsh get less looks, or more?

Is this the best Dolphins defense in decades? I have high praise for the unit, which features “Earthquake” Wake, but can they keep games close by themselves? The front seven should be one of the best units in the league, but the secondary has to finally show its worth all of those draft picks.

As somebody who has spent many of hours in college press boxes, getting worked up over a scout at a game can be over rated, or seen as a sign of things to come.

For example, I saw a scout for a certain NFL team at many of D-2 games, for a team I began my career covering. Sure enough he was their starting tackle 2 years later.

Tonight, a very reliable source has told me that there are 2 Miami Dolphins scouts at the Oklahoma State vs Arizona game in Stillwater.

This could mean nothing, but remember, the Dolphins have doubts where the Cowboys have talent.

QB Brandon Weeden and Biletnikoff winner WR Justin Blackmon are the two most prominent names. But there is also safety Markelle Martin, and even, punter Quinn Sharp.

Just saying.

While nobody knows where Miami will be drafting (I will be releasing my preseason predictions throughout the weekend) it never hurts to know the Dolphins scouts are being diligent.

I knew David Garrard when he first got to Jacksonville. He and his wife moved downstairs of the girl’s apartment I was dating at the time. The former ECU quarterback was just happy to be in the NFL, backing up Byron Leftwich and not knowing he would be one of the faces of the franchise for the next decade.

Fast forward to today, when news broke that the Jags would be battling Cincinnati for next year’s top draft pick. Garrard leaves in the same surprising way he came in, as a surprising note as the season begins.

Technically, Garrard did make the Pro Bowl in 2009, reserve pick-up or not. He hasn’t been stand-out during his career, but he has helped a poor Jacksonville team stay relevant in a tough division.

Now, as a free agent, the Dolphins should be picking him up ASAP. Yep, all caps. Miami needs him, as do many teams. You never hear Garrard battling coaches or players. Because he’s a stand-up vet, that is invaluable.

Teams like Miami, who will start Chad Henne and have Matt Moore as a back-up, should look long and hard at Garrard. No, he can’t start the season this Sunday, but as of Week 1, Garrard will be among the top 5 reserve QB’s.

Yes I know, it is the preseason, but still. UNDEFEATED!

The ‘ol in-state rivalry between the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Bucs gets underway Saturday and features two young teams looking to break through after years of watching from the outside.

Here are five things to watch in the game…and no, Tim Tebow will not be walking the sidelines, or will he?

1. Chad Henne vs. Josh Freeman – Is it just me, or does everytime Miami faces a strong young quarterback the gag reflex kicks in. Matt Ryan, Freeman, Joe Flacco, Josh Beck. That last one was a joke, but still, Freeman looks surprisingly strong early in his career. Henne is 1-for-2 in the preseason as far as strong performances go. He’ll get a lot of time tonight, so we will see.

2. Miami secondary vs. Mike Williams – Probably the only real concern on the defensive side of the ball for the ‘Fins is the secondary, or rather, who will get the tough assignment. Smith and Davis have played well, but who will get the call tonight?

3. Reggie Bush vs. an old foe – He played well against a well known opponent in Carolina last week, but Tampa has a much better defense. What new wrinkles will Bush be involved in this weekend?

4. The rest of Miami’s back vs. each other – Larry Johnson being brought in doesn’t signal the demise of Daniel Thomas, but Thomas had better blow through some tackles to ease the minds of fans and coaches alike. I saw Thomas in college a fair amount, while he looks like he could be a strong back, he has a lot to learn.

5. Playing time – Week 3 of the preseason is usually the gear up game for the season, but experienced vets that the coaches aren’t worried about still don’t play that much. So how long will the first teamers be out there? That will show the confidence level heading into the season.

Dear Honorable owner Stephen Ross, I __________, as a proud fan of the Miami Dolphins have a lowly peasant request to ask of you. Please pick up Denver’s Tim Tebow.

Sir, this move will not only benefit fans, but you and the great state of Florida as well. Bringing in the prodigal son of the Sunshine State is guaranteed to add a hype to Miami the likes of The Decision. But it doesn’t stop there.

Mr. Tebow has changed the lives of many through charity and volunteer work, that is why I also believe he can help with our amazing Florida Orange crops, which are approaching another dreadful winter.

The hand of Tebow could cure what happens off the field and around the state, but also on the field. More so his arm and feet could provide ‘Fins fans a real quarterback of the future to cheer for.

The post-Dan Marino era, or PD, began with Jay Fiedler, since then we have stuck through the A.J. Feeley’s, Damon Huard’s, Duante Culpepper’s, Brian Griese’s and Chad Henne’s of the world.

For decades, Miami fans prided themselves on having a great quarterback, even when they made just one Super Bowl during his tenure. We would accept another decade of mediocrity if ‘The Chosen One’ was leading his clan of merry misfits each Sunday.

Thank you for time and on the behalf of myself, ___________, and every Fins fan or Florida resident, we implore you to bring No. 15 back home.

*Now print, sign and send to Miami…hurry, there’s still time.

It’s that time of year again. The minute the strike ended, the fantasy leagues begun. As week 3 of the preseason gears up, many computer jockies across the nation are preparing their draft boards for another tortuous year.

So where do the Dolphins fit into this year’s draft? Well, they are few and far between, but here the best picks based on quality and round.

1. Miami Dolphins D/ST – Clyde Gates and Phillip Livas returning kicks…has worked really well. But more importantly is the ‘Fins defense. Cameron Wake and Jason Taylor at OLB. A group of 7 stellar D-linemen. Smith and Davis at CB. This unit will be great and can be had relatively cheap in most leagues. Big sack numbers should counteract points scored against.

2. Reggie Bush RB – Yep, I’m saying it here. With a new Daboll-offense that produced a break-out year for Peyton Hillis, Bush figures to be a featured staple of this year’s offense. Daniel Thomas might get more looks in the red zone, but Bush will rack up yards receiving and rushing.

3. Brandon Marshall WR – Marshall’s stock is a bit too high in most leagues, but he would be a great No. 2 WR if you can sneak him in. Miami looks to feature the run more and Bush catching passes, but Marshall remains the best WR option on a team that will open in up when they have to.

4. Anthony Fasano TE – Fasano nearly killed me when I drafted him last year due to a mix of injuries and poor play, but in two preseason games he has been targeted by Chad Henne quite a bit. Ben Gates did well in Cleveland last year, so expect the same numbers for Fasano this year.

5. Daniel Thomas RB – Thomas will be eating the tough yards, but could also get a lot of the goalline carries for Miami. Bush will be the feature back, but Thomas would be a good reserve or plug-in player, especially late in the season when he sees more carries.

6. Dan Carpenter K – Never draft a kicker until the last round, and you could a lot worse than Carpenter. Tony Sparano trusts him from long distance, and he usually comes through with big kicks. Decent option in the late rounds.

7. Davone Bess WR – Bess is going undrafted in most leagues, and for good reason. He makes a lot of short catches, slants and screens. But he could also get back into the return game later in the season. Worth keeping an eye on.

Stay away from – Chad Henne QB, at least until he can prove something to a Fins fan, nonetheless the rest of the country. Brian Hartline WR, he should see ample time, but so far in preseason youngsters like Moore have seen more targets.
