Back in 2010, the Cincinnati Bengals signed Terrell Owens to give Carson Palmer another dangerous weapon to throw to on offense along with Chad Ochocinco and company. Despite a disappointing 4-12 finish to the regular season, Owens made a huge impact in the Bengals’ passing game (72 catches for 983 yards and nine touchdowns in 14 games) and now–it looks like Palmer may be trying to secretly recruit the controversial wideout to the Oakland Raiders for the 2012 season.

Palmer invited Owens to workout with Darrius Heyward-Bey, David Ausberry and Eddie McGee in Southern California and praised the veteran for the influence he had on the younger guys. While this has obviously stirred up the rumor mill about Owens possibly ending up in Oakland, Palmer made it clear how this was nothing more than a friendly workout and in no way was he trying to recruit T.O. to join the team for the 2012 season–mainly because of roster space.

However, this story sounds all too familiar from 2010 when Palmer was spotted working out with Owens prior to training camp only to end up joining the Bengals a few days later. The Raiders have a handful of young talented receivers that may or may not make a huge impact in 2012 and Owens would certainly be a much better option than most wideouts already on the roster

Even if he failed to end up with a team last year, Owens has one of the best work ethics of any player in the NFL and appears to still have another solid year or two left in him when it comes to playing in the NFL. If Owens would be willing to put his pride aside and actually take a reasonable deal instead of demanding more money than he deserves–this may be a match made in heaven for the Raiders.

Plus, Palmer could use all of the help he can get in the passing game considering how much pressure he faces heading into next season.

During the first five years of his career, Reggie Bush never seemed to fit in with the New Orleans Saints on offense as he struggled to live up to the hype from when he was selected as the second overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. Last season, Bush received a much-needed fresh start with the Miami Dolphins and recorded his best season since his rookie year after recording 1,086 rushing yards to go along with six touchdowns.

While expectations should be high once again in 2012 as Bush enters his second season with the Dolphins, the former Heisman Trophy winner may have set the bar way too high for a player of his caliber.

Bush recently discussed in an interview how one of his mail goals for the upcoming season is to take home the rushing title–which is awarded each year to the running back that records the most rushing yards during the regular season. Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew took home honors during the 2011 season after finishing with 1,606 rushing yards, but to see a player like Bush finish as the top rusher in 2012 may be one of the most ridiculous predictions of all time.

For starters, it took Bush until his sixth season to finally cross the 1,000-yard mark during the regular season–which means he was clearly overpaid for the type of numbers he produced during his time with the Saints. Bush deserves all of the credit in the world for wanting to achieve such goals, but maybe he should focus on realistic ones such as helping the Dolphins overtake the New England Patriots, New York Jets, and Buffalo Bills in the AFC East.

Donovan McNabb is desperately trying to earn one-last chance to make it as a starting quarterback in the NFL and has been doing everything in his power to prove to teams that there’s still some gas left in the tank–which includes losing 20 pounds during the offseason. While the chances of him earning a starting job for Week 1 seem highly unlikely considering all 32 teams seem to have some sort of idea as to who will be calling the shots at quarterback, there are a few teams that could benefit from bringing McNabb on board for insurance purposes–like the Philadelphia Eagles.

McNabb has always had a positive relationship with Andy Reid and the Eagles head coach recently praised his former quarterback by saying that he would “highly recommend” numerous teams to give him another shot. If this happens to be the case, why not let McNabb finish his career in the city it started in back in 1999?

Michael Vick is always going to be an injury risk considering how often he moves around in the pocket or breaks free for a run on his own. If something were to happen to Vick during the regular season, Philadelphia would be forced to rely on Mike Kafka, Trent Edwards, or Nick Foles to take over the duties at quarterback.

Kafka is still a work in progress and inexperienced when it comes to being a starter. Edwards has received plenty of opportunities to prove himself as a starter in the NFL and failed numerous times. And as for Foles–let’s just say the Eagles better hope they never face the situation where they’re forced to go with the rookie in 2012.

Obviously, McNabb would be a much better option over any of these three quarterbacks if something were to happen to Vick and if they could get him at the right price–this could end up being a wise decision for the Eagles. McNabb’s career may have taken a turn for the worse since being traded to the Washington Redskins back in 2010, but take a look at the weapons he’s been dealt with over the past two seasons.

It’s safe to say McNabb would be more effective with weapons like DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, and LeSean McCoy compared to what he had to work with in Washington and Minnesota. McNabb’s at a point in his career where he would be willing to do whatever it takes just to land a roster spot on a team–so Philadelphia should strongly consider bringing back their old veteran quarterback for at least the backup position.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs is coming off a phenomenal 2011 campaign in which he took home defensive MVP honors after recording 14 sacks and seven forced fumbles, but his status for next season is in jeopardy after tearing his Achilles’ tendon. Despite how serious this type of injury is, Suggs is willing to do whatever it takes to not miss any time off the field during the 2012 season.

Suggs seems determined to return to the field for Week 1 considering the injury is only a partial tear instead of a full one after having a successful surgery. Instead of the 11-12 month time table that was originally expected, there’s a good chance Suggs will be back to full strength in 4-6 months–which means he could be ready for the team’s critical Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Obviously, this would be great news for Baltimore as they would have their top pass rusher back in the lineup, but they also have to be cautious. The Achilles’ tendon is one of the most serious injuries in sports and the last thing the Ravens want is to have him back on the field too soon when it’s not fully healed.

Then again, Suggs is one of the most competitive players in the league–so he’s clearly going to do whatever it takes to make sure this injury gets healed as quickly as possible.

The Cincinnati Bengals have expressed interest in free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards–who spent last season with the San Francisco 49ers–to provide second-year quarterback Andy Dalton with another weapon in the passing game. While this may not come as a surprise considering the team has established a reputation for taking a risk on just about any player available no matter what, signing Edwards just isn’t worth the risk for a team like the Bengals.

Edwards signed a one-year deal with the 49ers last August, but was released before the final week of the regular season after he earned honors for one of the biggest busts for the 2011 season after recording just 15 receptions for 181 yards and zero touchdowns. While the argument can be made that Edwards has proven to be an effective wide receiver in the right offense (he caught 88 passes for 1,445 yards and 11 touchdowns with the New York Jets from 2009-10), it’s difficult to determine whether or not he would be a good fit for the Bengals.

A.J. Green is obviously the team’s option at wideout and while Cincinnati is still in the process of figuring out which player should be Dalton’s No. 2 man, Edwards certainly doesn’t seem to be the man for the job. Not only should Jordan Shipley bounce back after missing most of the 2011 season due to a torn ACL, but the team has high expectations for rookie Mohamad Sanu and Marvin Jones.

In other words–there’s no reason for the Bengals to waste their money on a washed-up player like Edwards for the 2012 season. Dalton has enough options in the passing game and if last season is any indication of what to expect–Edwards would only cause frustration within the organization and fan base for lack of production.

While this shouldn’t come as a surprise considering how much McCoy has struggled over his first two years with the Browns, it appears there’s someone else that played a big role in the team’s decision–Colt’s father Brad McCoy.

According to Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com via ProFootballTalk.com, the decision to part ways with McCoy actually dates back to last season to Week 14 when the Browns lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite suffering a concussion, the team kept McCoy in the game–which led to Colt’s dad Brad ripping the organization apart afterwards for choosing to do so.

Now, it appears the comments made about Colt by Brad are backfiring and played a big part in the team’s decision to part ways with the former Texas standout.

From Grossi’s article:

I’ve been told that McCoy’s fate as a former starter was sealed when his father sounded off about the club’s handling of his concussion in the Pittsburgh game on Dec. 8.

I was told at the time that Brad McCoy’s comments meant the end of McCoy in Cleveland, but I didn’t believe it then.

The comments did not drive the pursuit of a new quarterback, but I believe they contributed to McCoy’s demise.

I will have more to say about McCoy’s rather stunning demise at a later date.

Obviously, player safety is the most important thing in the world when it comes to the NFL and Colt’s father had every reason in the world to be frustrated with the organization after the team made a mistake by keeping him in the game. However, this is one of those situations where Brad needs to realize his son is an adult and should probably avoid getting involved as much as possible.

Colt’s a big boy and he could have easily handled this situation on his own without his father. Unfortunately for him, the Browns were Colt’s best and possibly only chance at a starting job in the NFL–so nice work on dad’s end.

Another day, another popular story in the world of New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow. While there have been plenty of great stories over the last year about fans asking athletes to dances, nothing compares to what one fan did this past weekend at her high school’s prom when she failed to land Tebow as her date.

According to Tim Gallagher of the Sioux City Journal, Kingsley-Pierson High School senior Rachel Bird decided to bring a life-size cardboard photo of Tebow as a date to her prom last weekend to get some laughs out of her fellow classmates. Thanks to a local Staples and the help of her mother, Bird was able to create a life-size cardboard print of Tebow and actually acted like he was the real Tebow throughout the night–which sounds hilarious when hearing about what she did throughout the night.

Here’s more details about Bird’s prom courtesy of Gallagher’s article:

Classmates convinced Bird to enter the gym as a “couple” at the grand march. She decided to do it. Announcer Scott Bahrke introduced her last. “Rachel Bird,” Bahrke said. “Escorted by Tim Tebow.”

“It was awkward, but people asked me to stop for photos during the grand march,” she said. “Believe me, this isn’t something I ever thought I’d be doing.”

She does contend she’s the biggest Tebow fan in her school. It would be hard to argue that point now.

Tebow, she said with a laugh, smiled throughout the grand march. He joined Bird at the dance. And while his handle broke when some of the boys passed him around during a fast song, Tebow remained gracious, ever the gentleman.

“He was a cheap date, and he didn’t talk much,” Bird joked. “And when I asked him to stand in a corner, he did. I don’t think it even hurt his feelings.”

Apparently, Bird had sent a message to Tebow via Twitter asking if he had any plans on April 28, but the quarterback failed to respond–which should come as no surprise considering he probably receives 1,000′s of messages each day. It may not have been the same experience, but Bird deserves all of the credit in the world for pulling off an act like this as she will always be remembered as the girl who brought a cardboard Tebow to prom by her classmates.

Maybe if she’s lucky enough, Tebow will come across this story and reach out to her and thank her for such an awesome time on behalf of his cardboard version. Thanks to Gallagher and the Sioux City Journal for the photo in this article above.
