The Washington Redskins cleared house at the safety position, allowing Laron Landry to walk via Free Agency and releasing Oshiomogho Atogwe. For various reasons, the position was in need of an upgrade – but can the guys Washington has now really be considered that?

In Series 1 of “Impartial Judgement” we broke down the running back position. In these series, I’ll have a chance to break down the positives and negatives, with the intent to be a straight shooter providing unbiased opinions. So today, we’re breaking down what seems to be a patched-together safety position.

Washington added Tanard Jackson, Madieu Williams, Brandon Meriweather, Cedric Griffin, and Jordan Bernstine this off-season. With Reed Doughty and second year safety, DeJon Gomes still on the roster, the back-end is banking on potential. Since I’m supposed to give “unbiased opinions,” I’ll base these next statements off of prior knowledge (before these guys became Redskins):

Tanard Jackson is the only safety that somewhat excites me. Jordan Bernstine is the only safety that intrigues me, and DeJon Gomes is the only safety that’s most recently proved himself worthy of being a starter.

Now, I’m not saying the other players won’t have success… I’m simply acknowledging my thoughts on the new additions before becoming members of the Washington Redskins. As a Die Hard Redskins fan, and one of the designated drivers for the, “In Shanny I trust” bus, it’s easy to be optimistic about any signing. That’s why we start series like, Impartial Judgement.

I’ve never been a fan of 2-time Pro Bowler, Brandon Meriweather. I’ve always thought that he was overrated during his tenure with the New England Patriots. Obviously, with 12 interceptions in 3 season (2008, 2009, 2010) you’ll get some recognition in the popularity contest known as the Pro Bowl. However, he’s not a consistent talent that I’d consider Pro Bowl worthy. He’s an in-the-box type player, who prides his game on big hits. But his wild playing style gets him in trouble a lot. He doesn’t consistently lower his shoulders when engaging into a tackle, causing several helmet-to-helmet penalties. What may be most troublesome is his off-field issues, and with the low risk, high reward deal Washington gave Meriweather, you would think he’d attempt to stay out of trouble. Well, that hasn’t been the case so far… Not long after the Redskins signed Meriweather, he received a DUI. I personally believe DUI’s are totally irresponsible and the league has taken notice. Meriweather is talented, however, and could very well earn a starting spot on the Redskins roster.

Newly acquired secondary coach, Raheem Morris knows how to deal with troublesome players. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Morris had to deal with quite a few “knuckleheads,” including the now Washington Redskin – Tanard Jackson. In Tampa Bay, Jackson was suspended twice for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Jackson’s releases was cited as “slow rehabilitation” but it’s obvious the new regime didn’t want to deal with the character flaws. Even with the character issues, Tanard excites me. He’s a Bruce Allen draft pick from his days with the Buccaneers, and Raheem Morris helped Jackson successfully switch from corner to safety. Defensive Coordinator, Jim Haslett has said several times that this system doesn’t possess a “free” or “strong” safety. You either play in-the-box, or in the backfield. Which essentially describes the two positions, but anyway – Jackson will play backfield. He’s been slowed by injuries, causing him not to be as productive as he was earlier in his career. However, this is a guy that is well put together. I love his skill-set. He’s physical and can be a play-maker, but once again, we’re banking on Jackson to be the guy he was earlier in his career.

A question is still a question until it’s answered, and right now, everything at safety is in question.

Madieu Williams is a seasoned vet, and you basically know what you’re going to get from him. Much like Reed Doughty, he’s a guy that can fill in, when needed. Though, a lot of Redskins Nation isn’t too fond of Doughty (including myself), he’s a guy that will likely stick around another season because he’s trustworthy depth.

Cedric Griffin is coming off a horrendous season, however, he’s a guy that’s been nagged by injuries and could have been playing out of position. Coming out of college, a lot of scouts felt like he should move from CB to safety. He was never given that opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings, but will with the Redskins. He’ll have a chance to compete with Tanard Jackson – may the best man win. Likely scenario is, Jackson wins the job. However, Griffin has a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove that he belongs. In nickel packages, Griffin also gives you flexibility to utilize him there.

Another conversion guy is Rookie, Jordan Bernstine. He’s a guy that intrigues me, and Bernstine could battle for playing time early. He played a little Strong safety at Iowa, and prides himself on tackling.

The guy that seems to get lost in the mix is DeJon Gomes. Last year, Gomes was plugged in and at times, played exceptionally well. I seriously believe Gomes has a legitimate shot at starting over Brandon Meriweather. Though Gomes is still raw, he became a better player with more reps.

This is a patched together safety position. There’s a lot of depth, but is there really two legit starters in this group? If Tanard Jackson stays on the straight and narrow, I definitely believe he is. Brandon Meriweather? Maybe, but I’m a DeJon Gomes believer, as of now. You can’t fix every hole on a team in one off-season… Let’s just hope this patch holds.

The Washington Redskins re-signed Tim Hightower to a one-year contract Sunday, creating what’s now a legitimate four back competition. Although it’s essentially Hightower’s job to lose.

As a columnist it’s my duty to address both sides of any situation. However, as a Die Hard Redskins fan, it’s easy to be a tad bias. It’s like having a child that plays sports – you’re always going to be bias towards him or her. So, I’ve started a series called “Impartial Judgment.” In these series, I’ll have a chance to break down the positives and negatives, with the intent to be a straight shooter providing unbiased opinions.

Washington has four running backs fighting for a spot on the 53 man roster. Three are likely to be selected, and with Alfred Morris being Washington’s 6th round 2012 draft pick, the final three may not be so obvious. Along with Morris are two 2nd year players, Roy Helu Jr. and Evan Royster. In 2011, Tim Hightower entered the season as Washington’s starting running back, tallying up 321 yards on 84 carries with one touchdown and 78 receiving yards, scoring once. In Week 7, Tim Hightower tore his ACL in the 2nd quarter, after having his best game of the season. Hightower was nagged by minor injuries, which he kept quiet about early in the season. It was apparent in his play, as he didn’t have the start most anticipated after flashing great ability in the pre-season.

With Hightower out, Roy Helu emerged as a legit starter, posting three straight 100 yard games – Weeks 12, 13, and 14. Helu accumulated 640 yards on 151 carries with one touchdown, and 379 yards on 49 receptions and a TD. Roy Helu seems to be the obvious player who will benefit most from the dual threat of Robert Griffin III, as he’s big play waiting to happen. However, Helu’s pass protection needs fine tuning, and he seems to be the perfect complement – not main course.

Evan Royster was called up from practice squad and active for the final 6 games of the season. He flashed promise in the last two weeks of the season, posting consecutive 100 yard games. Royster had 328 yards on 56 carries, and 68 yards on 9 receptions. Much like Roy Helu, he needs to improve on pass protection. However, compared to Helu, he seems to be more of a “main course” guy than a complement.

Washington’s backfield is full of potential, but potential doesn’t always equate to production. On the surface, Washington doesn’t have a legit starter at the running back position. It’s a position that is done by committee around the NFL. There are only a handful of legit starters in the league, but that hasn’t hurt teams like the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers.

Mike Shanahan typically rides the hot hand. However, he feels that Tim Hightower is the most complete back on the roster. He’s a guy that Shanahan can trust in pass protection, as well as the passing and running game. For Helu, Royster, and Alfred Morris, it comes down to pass protection and the ability to catch the football. All of those guys have no problem locating a hole, cutting back, and gaining yards. Pass protection is key.

Washington’s rookie running back, Alfred Morris prides himself on pass protection. He’s a guy that can also play special teams, which may be important for that 3rd slotted back. If Morris can prove he has soft hands, and successfully displays the attributes he’s touted for – don’t be surprised if he sneaks his way on the 53 man roster. Now, he is a 6th round rookie, and obviously he has a lot to fine tune. But he and Royster are likely to battle for a spot on the final roster. Mike Shanahan could stash Morris on the practice squad, before deciding to pull him out his back pocket – which is something he’s often done.

In my opinion, Helu should be used much like the Kansas City Chiefs utilize Jammal Charles. Though Jammal has been their most productive back prior to his season ending injury last year, he’s never been considered their starter. He’s a great change of pace back that will take advantage of the opportunities given to him. That’s a role, I believe Roy Helu Jr. would shine in. Especially with RG3 posing a threat to defenses, Helu on those pitch-out run plays could be lethal.

Tim Hightower is an overachiever. He’s not fast and doesn’t do anything extremely great, but you know what you’re getting from Tim. He does everything well and will provide additional leadership to the offense. Hightower has never been the main guy, even in his days with the Arizona Cardinals. He’s always been a complement. So the question is worth asking, can this guy be the main course? He has to stay healthy, and let’s not forget, he’s struggled holding on to the football. However, as the vet and most complete back Washington has, he’ll likely be the starter.

The Redskins are hanging their hat on potential at the running back position. It’s a common theme with this regime, and recent history suggest that the staff knows what they’re doing. Mike Shanahan typically has success with his running backs. So whoever starts, it really won’t matter – cumulative production is all that needs to be worried about.

As reported a few weeks ago, Hightower and Washington maintained interest in getting deal done, even after Hightower visited the New England Patriots in April.

Tim Hightower, 26, is a player Mike Shanahan covets and believes can be a starter for the team. Washington acquired Hightower from the Arizona Cardinals in 2011, trading Vonnie Holiday and a 2012 sixth round pick.

The DC native is enthused about the direction Washington is headed in and wants to be a major part of it. Tim Hightower opened the season as Washington’s starting running back, and accumulated 321 yards on 84 carries with one touchdown. The running back also had 78 receiving yards and one touchdown. Hightower was having maybe his best game of the season with 88 yards on 17 carries before tearing his ACL in the 2nd quarter. It was indeed a blow for Hightower, but he’s now close to full recovery and has been doing on-field workouts for nearly two months now.

Tim Hightower’s blocking ability, decisive running style, and leadership skills is what sets him apart. The Redskins need Hightower to help bring along their rookie QB, Robert Griffin III. With Hightower, Roy Helu and company, the Redskins will have a formidable backfield. I’m excited and pleased to know Hightower is back home. He’s a perfect fit in Mike Shanahan’s one-cut scheme, and I believe could be the Washington Redskins comeback player of the year.

Washington’s Linebacker tandem, Brain Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan modeled the Redskins’ 80 year Anniversary Jerseys Thursday evening during a ceremony held at Redskins Park. The Nike Elite 51 Washington Redskins 80th Anniversary Jersey is a modern interpretation of those worn in 1937 – paying tribute to the great “Slinging” Sammy Baugh who led the Redskins to their first National Championship. The jersey also signifies the teams move from Boston to Washington, D.C.

“In honor of 80 years of rich tradition this anniversary uniform displays our heritage” said Daniel M. Snyder. “We hope that it will bring back great memories to our fans.”

Here’s some of the best pictures displaying Washington’s fresh Old School Uniforms:

Redskins’ owner Dan Snyder and his staff worked closely with Nike to create a look that spoke to the club’s unique heritage, while highlighting several key details that helped define the team’s history.

The helmet features a unique leather-like finish and the words “Team, Effort, Tradition” are embroidered on the inside of the neckline, serving as a reminder to each athlete of what it means to be a Redskin.

Much like all Elite 51 Nike Jerseys, Washington’s 80th Anniversary Uni’s are designed and engineered from the inside out. The new uniform focuses on creating a system where the baselayer, padding, jersey and pant work in concert.

Lightweight padding is also integrated directly into the crucial “hit zones” in the baselayer.

New innovations include – Flywire technology in the neckline, reducing weight and providing a lockdown fit over pads. As well as, increasing sleeve articulation for better range of motion, and integrating new four-way stretch fabrication to provide a streamlined shrink-wrap fit.

The Washington Redskins’ and Dallas Cowboys’ hearing will be facilitated today, in a dispute over the $46 million in cap space that was stripped from the two teams for taking taking advantage of the “uncapped year” in 2010. The hearing will proceed without witnesses or evidence, instead putting a focus on jurisdictional issues – if the Cowboys and Redskins have any rights at all, since the NFLPA agreed to remove the cap space.

The hearing will likely focus on the motion to dismiss the NFL’s filed response to the grievance, which contends that the NFLPA agreement to the cap penalties prevents the teams from attacking it.

This is an issue that probably won’t be resolved any time soon, as a second hearing could take place if/when Special Master Stephen Burbank allows the grievance to proceed.

Of course, this situation not only upsets the teams involved, but the fans as well. The NFL/NFLPA seemingly decided to make an example out of two of football’s most valuable franchises. There’s no proof of any rules distributed during the uncapped season, because it was uncapped. They’re leveling the Cowboys and Redskins for apparent front loaded contracts to Dallas WR, Miles Austin and former Redskins DT, Albert Haynesworth. Both contracts were approved by the NFL, but as Cowboys Owner, Jerry Jones noted – this is a complicated issue.

Here’s a statement released by Redskins Executive Vice President and General Manager, Bruce Allen:

“The Washington Redskins have received no written documentation from the NFL concerning adjustments to the team salary cap in 2012 as reported in various media outlets. Every contract entered into by the club during the applicable periods complied with the 2010 and 2011 collective bargaining agreements and, in fact, were approved by the NFL commissioner’s office.”

RG3 hired an attorney and designed his own company, Thr3escompany, LLC, submitting applications to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a total of four trade marks – RG3, RGIII, Robert Griffin III, and Unbelievably Believable. Unfortunately, a ton of sites are selling RG3 products, and have done so well before he even became a member of the Washington Redskins.

Griffin trademarking his name isn’t much of a shocker… I mean, it is his name and it’s pretty famous now. What initially makes you scratch your head is, why did Griffin trademark “Unbelievably Believable?”

“This is unbelievably believable. It’s unbelievable because in the moment we’re all amazed when great things happen. But it’s believable because great things don’t happen without hard work.”

RG3 made that statement at the Heisman Trophy Ceremony and it created a lot of buzz. So, much like Chad Ochocinco’s fiance’ and Basketball Wives reality TV star, Evelyn Lozada, who’s trademarked a ton of her unique sayings – RG3 made a solid business decision by trademarking his. Griffin plans on using the phrase for promoting the goods and services of others, sponsorship of sports, athletic events, and activities.

Of course, Robert Griffin III has a post football dream of becoming an attorney or agent himself. Decisions like this proves how intelligent he is. I just feel bad for those who’ve created and distributed merchandise with his name…

The Washington Redskins concluded their 3 day Rookie mini camp on Sunday, which marked the first time Kirk Cousins and Robert Griffin III threw on a field together. When Washington selected Cousins 102 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, it seemingly opened a can of worms – for some it was the beginning of an unwarranted Quarterback Controversy. Mike Shanahan was obviously aware, and decided to waste no time naming Robert Griffin III Washington’s starting Quarterback.

Shocking.

Two weeks after selecting RG3 #2 overall, Mike Shanahan stated the obvious, while knocking down any form of future controversy. “He’s our starter, period,” Shanahan said. Though Shanahan often preaches competition at every position, he wanted to make it clear – neither Rex Grossman nor Kirk Cousins will have a shot to be the Redskins starting QB. The only QB job that may somewhat be open is the backup position. Kirk and Rex will compete. There was and will never be a QB controversy, as long as Robert Griffin III efficiently does his job. Which we all expect him to do.

Mike Shanahan made a solid PR move and simply said what he needed to say. It seems like Shanahan is learning from his “verbal” mistakes in the past, and wants to put RG3 in the best situation possible. Shanahan also told the media congregated at Redskins park that he’s working on tailoring the system to Robert. “Anytime you trade 2 firsts and a 2nd, you must have a plan in place,” said Shanahan. The Shanaplan is in full swing, and I’m excited to see this franchise finally heading in the correct direction.

In a interview with CBS, Robert Griffin III’s grandmother spoke about how overjoyed and excited she is about her grandson, Robert Griffin III being able to play close to her home in Richmond, VA. “The whole family is proud of him,” said Juley Allen. “I love him to death.”

Now that Robert Griffin III is officially a Washington Redskins, his grandmother has switched her allegiance to the burgundy and gold. RG3 mania has excited the DC, Virginia, and Maryland area. Juley Allen says she will gladly respond to the nickname “RG3-G,” as in Robert Griffin III’s grandmother. RG3-G said she anticipated her grandson moving close to her after Washington struck a blockbuster deal for the rights to draft Griffin III. “I walk around like I’m on top of the world,” Allen said.

RG3, an Army brat, moved all over the world but always was an athlete. “Baseball, basketball, football, soccer, running – he was good,” said RG3-G. Most of his family lives in New Orleans and of course, are now Redskins fans. Robert is excited to travel down south to play the Saints for his first regular season game as a Redskin. It will indeed be a homecoming.

RG3-G says she plans to attend every home game, knowing that winning will keep her grandson close to her. “I want front row seats, not down by the hot dog stand or chili,” RG3-G joked.

When asked if her grandson will take Washington to the Super Bowl this year, she boldly said “Yes!”

RG3-G said she’s counting down the days until training camp and would love to see the Redskins come to Richmond, but after talking with the coaches on Draft Day, she’s not sure that’s going to happen this year. So, that settles that. See you in Ashburn!

Both players were set to be important pieces to new defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme. Typically, losing your defensive captain and sack specialist would impact a defense, however, that will not be the case with New Orleans.

Steve Spagnuolo constructs and operates his defense from the inside out. 2nd year defensive end, Cameron Jordan is a guy that could really break out in Spag’s scheme. Cam has the versatility to play 3-technique – pass rush tackle, and he can also play the 7, lined up as a defensive end. Cam has pass rushing ability, and his skill-set could elevate with Spagnuolo. Though Junior Galette will likely fill-in for Smith, playing opposite of Cam, I totally expect Spagnuolo to utilize Cam Jordan’s versatility. With Sedrick Ellis providing interior rush, Sagnuolo will not be forced to alter his scheme much – if at all. He will still primarily rush with his 4 man front.

Spagnuolo’s defensive philosophy tends to benefit inside linebackers, who in this scheme are free to roam. Jonathan Vilma is the heart of New Orleans defense. Though his leadership ability will be hard to replace, his production will not. With the additions of Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne, the Saints provided themselves with insurance for Vilma.

Lofton is a tackling machine and David Hawthorne is a guy that can move around, creating havoc in the backfield. The combination of Lofton and Hawthorne makes for quite the tandem. Both can alternate manning the middle of New Orleans’ defense, but there will also be occasions where Lofton and Hawthorne are on the field together. The Saints knew that Vilma was going to be punished significantly, which prompted them to sign two of the best linebackers available in free agency. In doing so, the Saints actually improved their defense.

The Washington Redskins will plan accordingly. With rookie quarterback, Robert Griffin III, and the possibility of at least 1 new – young starting offensive lineman, this will not be an easy outing for Washington’s offense. These suspensions will only make the Saints defense tougher.

When the Washington Redskins were on the clock in the 4th round of professional football’s off-season phenomenon, the 2012 NFL Draft, many expected Washington to select a defensive back or running back. Some figured the team could even go offensive line, after selecting Josh LeRibeus in the 3rd round. Mike Shanahan, however, had a different plan. A plan that he felt was in the best interest of the franchise – but was it really?

With 102 overall, the Washington Redskins selected Kirk Cousins, QB, Michigan State. When the pick was announced, I was at a restaurant enjoying a nice breakfast – french toast, bacon… breakfast potatoes with the little parsley things on top. While watching the draft on my cellular device, I nearly threw my phone across the dinning area in complete and utter disbelief of the selection Washington had just made. Of course, that was my initial reaction. I waited a bit – finished my food, and posted a message on twitter:

Since that tweet, it’s been a whirlwind. Some fans understand and endorse the pick, others completely disliked it. Some media support Mike Shanahan’s decision to choose a quarterback 100 picks after drafting Robert Griffin III, and others have labeled it as a “Unnecessary Quarterback Controversy.”

Well that’s not unusual – Redskins fans are used to QB controversy’s. It’s nothing new. The Redskins seem to have a “QB controversy” every year, but this time, Redskins fans should enjoy the conundrum. Having two quarterbacks that most had in their top 5 2012 NFL Draft QB rankings is a good problem to have. Of course, there are some that believe the Washington Redskins should have addressed another need at that spot, but obviously none of those players convicted Mike Shanahan. None, except Kirk Cousins.

Often times we get caught up in what the media or non-team scouts perceive about a player(s), and forget that teams rank their own. Mike Shanahan had a second round grade on Kirk Cousins, and with him on the board in the 4th round, it was too good of a value to pass up. Why pass on a player you believe strongly in, to take a guy you’re not so sure about? If you take a guy you don’t believe in and he ends up not having success, that’s a pick wasted. GM’s and coaches that select best player available, according to their board, often times have more success than those that don’t.

For the first time in at least a decade, the Redskins have two young, intelligent, and capable quarterbacks. It’s a conundrum that should excite the fan-base. Washington just had a major introduction for RG3. Brought forth with Prompt and circumstance, the infantry was ordered, secret service surrounded every area that Robert graced with his presence. It was indeed presidential, and should leave no question as to whom that franchise has indulged all hope in.

Kirk Cousins is a competitor and natural leader. However, his personality isn’t brash or forthright. He will fall right in place and handle the situation with complete class. Cousins knew there was a possibility he would have to be a backup. He also understands that Robert Griffin III is and will be the Washington Redskins quarterback. Every football player should embrace competition, and having a guy like Cousins will only force RG3 to continue working hard.

Let’s say, hypothetically, RG3 doesn’t become the QB everyone expects him to be and Cousins proves to be a complete stud. Though that’s beyond far-fetched, it’s a good situation to be in. Not to mention, if RG3 proves to be great, and Cousins shows flashes during any opportunity he gets - whether that’s pre-season or being called up to replace RG3 due to an injury, that benefits the team. The Quarterback position is the most valued position in all of football. If Washington ever decides to make Cousins available via trade, there’s no doubt he would be in demand.

If a team is only focused on the starting 22 players, often times they won’t have success. It’s like going into free agency and picking up all the big names, and thinking you have the “dream team.” Eagles fans can defend that claim, and Redskins fans should definitely understand. Certain positions rarely hit free agency – Left Tackles, great defensive linemen, and quarterbacks you can build a franchise around. The Redskins made their greatest weakness, into possibly one of their strengths. It’s a conundrum that should excite Redskins Nation.
