After week 2 off the NFL underway, the Arizona Cardinals are sitting on top of the NFC West with the Seattle Seahawks with records of 1-1.

The team has been power ranked #20 by Fox Sports. This is a drop of 5 spots from the previous week.

Fox Sports comment on the team is, “While Matt Leinart clearly isn’t the answer, it remains to be seen if veteran QB Derek Anderson can find the necessary consistency for this team to make it to the playoffs. Their secondary issues were exposed against the Falcons.”

The team will face the Oakland Raiders, who are power ranked #29, on Sunday. Once again, the Raiders are also trying to figure out their quarterback situation.

If the Cardinals can get their defense to where it should be, as well as Anderson getting settled in, the team should come out of Sunday’s match-up with a 2-1 record.

The Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells went through a limited workout Wednesday and coach Ken Whisenhunt says that the team will “really test” his injured knee during workouts and practice on Thursday.

Wells did not practice all last week and sat out the season opener at St. Louis with a bruised right knee.

Also, Arizona receiver Early Doucett was being examined for a sports hernia. If it happens to be just that, he will have it repaired, Whisenhunt said, and would be sidelined for “a couple of weeks.”

Defensive end Kenny Iwebema (knee) and safety Hamza Abdullah did not practice on Wednesday, when the team worked out indoors the “bubble” practice facility at Arizona State University.

After sitting out of Thursday practice with a sore right knee, second year running back Beanie Wells status for Game 1 is in doubt. He said the knee is “a lot better” but it would be the coach’s decision on whether he would play or not.

With Tim Hightower continuing to improve both his running and receiving skills, coach Whisenhunt can afford to sit Wells for one game. His thought process is cautious saying, “What concerns me is I don’t want this to be something that in week 12 or week 13 or week 14 that you’re having issues with.” The play of LaRod Stephens-Howling and Jason Wright give Whisenhunt another reason to consider sitting Wells.

Beanie led the team in rushing with 793 yards in 176 carries, an average of 4.5 yards per carry. Coming on strong in the latter half of the season, everyone started to see what he could do. He is predicted to have a breakout season as the Cardinals shifts to a running football team.

Unfortunately, fans may have to wait one more week to see another stiff arm.

[picappgallerysingle id="9600737"]

The Arizona Cardinals Pro-Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will be healthy and ready for action this Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

Fitzgerald was injured in the first preseason game against the Houston Texans and has sat out of play since. The diagnosis was a sprained MCL in his right knee.

Fitzgerald said that the coaching staff insisted on a cautious approach to his injury.

“I wanted to go earlier,” he said, “but they kept holding me out and I think that was good. Injured, you can be worst enemy sometimes. ”

Fitzgerald didn’t take off any plays even though he was on the sidelines. You would always see him talking to other receivers, right there when the quarterback came off the field, and in every team huddle. This shows exactly he was selected as one of the offense’s captains for the second year in a row, his dedication to the team cannot be matched by many.

He will now look to extend his streak of starting every single game of his career, currently 92 regular season games and eight postseason games.

“Every day I step out on the practice field, I want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to make sure I’m doing the best and I’m following the lead of the best,” he said, “guys like Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison and Cris Carter, Michael Irvin, Tim Brown. They set the blueprint on what it was to be a great receiver. All I have to do is try to follow it the best way I can.”

The Cardinals will play the Rams this Sunday on FOX at 1:15 MST.

The trade will allow Deuce Lutui to reclaim his starting position, as well as dump Wells’ $2.4 million contract.

With final cuts being made on Saturday, this may allow one more player to find a spot that might have been cut. The only thing left for the Cardinals to decided is whether or not they will cut or trade Matt Leinart.

The Arizona Cardinals announced on Wednesday that they have signed the two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle to a four-year extension worth up to $48 million, with $30 million guaranteed. His current contract is now extended to 2015.

“The thing that has really made it so apparent that we wanted to get this deal done was his growth as a player and as a person,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. Dockett has developed his game to become one of the best at his position, and he finally has the contract to back it up.

Since the 2007 season where he recorded nine sacks in sixteen starts, Dockett has had continuous success at his position. With his performance came the desire for a contract that reflected his play, showing this by sitting out of the 2009 training camp. Now with his contract in place Dockett can leave it all behind and work to get the Cardinals back into the playoffs.

Dockett decided to leave all the contract issues to his agent this preseason. Today in the press conference he said, “Once I put my helmet on and shoulder pads, I can honestly tell you I really didn’t think about contract. I just focused on football and believed they could get it done.”

With the final preseason game tonight at 7pm against the Washington Redskins, all of Dockett’s focus can continue to stay with football. No more negations, media rants about what he deserves or holding out on training camps – Dockett got what he wanted and now can only do one thing, help his team play the best defense possible for them to succeed.

[picappgallerysingle id="9550644"]

League sources have indicated that Matt Leinart is being sought out by the New York Giants, Oakland Raiders and Buffalo Bills.

After recent speculation that the Cardinals were considering cutting Leinart it, now seems that after four years it is time for Matt Leinart and the Cardinals to move on. It could have been the system he was uncomfortable with or he just isn’t NFL quality. With suitors like the Giants, Raiders and Bills knocking at the door the team may be better off trading Leinart before it is too late. Leinart may be better off in Seattle as well, although in the same division as the Cardinals, he may benefit from playing under Pete Carroll again.

Leinart’s three performances in preseason play has lead his fellow teammates to believe he is not qualified enough to lead a team to victory each and every game. He did complete 80.8% of his passes, but was never able to lead the starters to early points.

Derek Anderson’s play, as well as the rookies Max Hall and John Skelton, have proven that they are ready to take over for Leinart’s lack of leadership and stellar play. Anderson will bring his past Pro Bowl experience and solidify his spot as the team’s starter each night. He may be able to rejuvenate his career as Kurt Warner did when he was able to have the weapons the team still has.

Once again, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt has decided to start Derek Anderson instead of Leinart in Thursday’s preseason finale.

[picappgallerysingle id="9593342"]

After only two preseason games, Matt Leinart has lost his starting quarterback job once again. Coach Ken Whisenhunt stated that Derek Anderson will start Saturday night against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

This move could be temporary, but right now Coach Whisenhunt is most likely testing the waters to see if he can shake up his starting offense and get some early points.

Leinart will eventually play the second quarter.

In 2008, Leinart lost his starting job to Kurt Warner during preseason play and since has never been able to solidify the position. His inability to throw consistent and get in the same time with his wide receivers has been a main concern of the coaches. Although Anderson has had the same struggles to a lesser extent, seeing more time on the field has benefited him to be able to start Saturday afternoon.

Is this the last chance Leinart will get before it is time for the organization to move on?

He stated during last weekend’s game that his confidence isn’t bothered, but after a another possible demotion it’s hard to not see how it hasn’t been affected.

Anderson will look to revert to his play that got him on the Pro Bowl in 2008. Having Steve Breaston, Early Doucet, and Larry Fitzgerald to his left and right, as well as Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower behind him could make the transition easy if he is able to steal the starting spot.

The game will start at 5:30 PM MST and can be seen locally on ABC-15.

Former Arizona Cardinals and future Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner has decided to come out of retirement. He has moved to the booth as a analyst for FOX this upcoming season.

His first game in the booth as an analyst will be for his former team Arizona Cardinals when they host the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints on October 10.

This will most likely be an easy transtition for Warner as he seemed to be very comfortable in front of a camera before, at half time, or after a game. He will be able to provide a personal look into the Cardinals team without him, as well as help fans get a better perspective of what is exactly happening on the field.

Former Seahawks and Falcons coach Jim Mora is also joining Fox as an analyst this season.

Saturday night against the Houston Texans, Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald sprained the MCL in his right knee.

After catching a 16-yard pass Fitzgerald was immediately tackled at the knees by Texans’ safety Eugene Wilson. At first it seemed like a hard hit, but like usual Fitzgerald jumped up to get back to huddle. He stayed in the game for a few more plays, but was seen lightly limping on the field. Athletic trainers soon tended to his sore right knee wrapping it in ice. He was able to walk on his leg by his own, which is a good sign for a speedy recovery.

The Arizona Republic was told by Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt that he plans to be careful with Fitzgerald over the next few weeks. Most likely this was his last catch in game situation until Sept 12.

“They say they want to be careful with it so it doesn’t linger and … I’m ready to go for Week 1 at St. Louis,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s frustrating, because I was having my best camp as a pro.”

Fitzgerald stated that his weight was down and he was looking forward to a monster year. “I will be fine and rehabbing and getting ready as fast as possible.” He continued to say, “Don’t write me off just yet.”

It is important for the team, and most importantly Matt Leinart to have a healthy Larry Fitzgerald for the entire team. If any time is missed Steve Breaston, Early Doucet, Andre Robets, Edward Grant, Darren Mougey and other wide receivers will be more than willing to step up to the challenge.
