UFC 161 will not be remembered as one of the more dynamic events in UFC history.

The injury-riddled card was advertised to be a battle of hard-hitting heavyweights and light heavyweights. Neither the main event nor co-main event, however, delivered as advertised.

Even worse, the Ryan Jimmo-Igor Pokrajac fight, which was inexplicably placed on the main pay-per-view card, took all the energy out of the sold out Winnipeg crowd. Both Jimmo and Pokrajac elected to hold each other against the fence for the majority of the 15-minute fight, causing the crowd to voice its displeasure for most of the final two rounds.

The lone bright spot, in the otherwise terrible pay-per-view, was the opening fight of the main card. Shawn Jordan was paired off against Pat Barry in a heavyweight fight to kick things off.

Both Jordan and Barry had promised fireworks leading up to this fight and both fighters wasted little time delivering the minute soon as they stepped in the cage.

After close to a minute of back-and-forth action, Jordan caught Barry with two huge right uppercuts. As Barry went to the mat to cover up, Jordan unloaded almost a dozen left hands to the downed fighter, forcing the referee to intervene.

The victory was Jordan’s third in four fights since entering the UFC. All three of those victories have come by way of knockout.

“I didn’t figure we would stay up too long,” Jordan told a group of reporters at the post fight press conference. “Either way, one of us was going to go down at the end.”

Fortunately, for Jordan, it was Barry who went down. Now, Jordan finds himself in a position to fight a big name in the heavyweight division and cash in on a big payday.

<strong>Micah Owings</strong>, who was drafted in the third round of the 2005 MLB Draft by the Diamondbacks and spent his first two Big League seasons with the club, will be the Arizona's starter on Saturday evening against the Twins. Owings and Double-A pitcher <strong>Wes Roemer</strong> were the two options being considered. <!--more-->

The decision was made by <strong>Kirk Gibson</strong> after last night's win against the Braves. A spot became available in the rotation after <strong>Armando Galarraga</strong> was designated for assignment earlier in the week due to his struggles through the first month and a half of the season.

Owings spent his last two seasons in Cincinnati where he had an ERA well over five in both seasons. He was signed by Arizona in the offseason on a minor league deal and was invited to spring training. Owings didn't make the club out of spring training and was sent down to Triple-A Reno. In seven starts there, he is 3-1 with a 4.85 ERA.

In his two seasons with Arizona, Owings became more known amongst fan more for his hitting rather than his pitching. In 184 at-bats in the bigs, he is hitting .293 with nine home runs and 34 RBI. He is hitting .250 with a pair of RBI in the minors this season. Owings will be another weapon for the D'Backs offense for as long as he is up.

Whether or not Owings will be in the rotation for more than one start remains to be seen. <strong>Zach Duke</strong>, who broke his pitching hand during spring training, is very close to being 100 percent healthy. The left-hander is scheduled to make a start at Triple-A on Monday and if all goes well, Duke probably will be in Arizona's rotation sometime next week.

UFC 161 featured an important light heavyweight bout between heavy hitters Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson. Coming into this fight, both fighters were desperate as both were coming off some pretty poor performances.

The fight started out with both fighters measuring each other, and Evans pressured Henderson. Henderson ended up catching Evans at the end of the round with a stiff jab which sent him to the canvas. Rounds two and three were Evans’ as he was able to land more shots and force Henderson back. The judges ultimately gave Evans the split-decision victory.

It wasn’t the best performance from both fighters because they seemed very timid. However, a win is a win, especially in the sport of MMA where anything can happen within seconds. Evans now has a win under his belt over a very game Henderson, and it will be interesting to see who the UFC matches him up against.

A potential fight with Glover Teixeira seems like the most logical fight at this point. Both are coming off wins, and if the winner can win in impressive fashion, they very well could be next in line for a title shot after Jon Jones defends his belt against Alexander Gustafsson.

For Henderson, it seems like he might finally be slowing down due to age. In his post-fight interview, Ariel Helwani asked if he was still going to fight, and Henderson responded with a quick yes. Who the UFC matches him up against next remains to be seen, but I would personally like to see him rematch Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, which would be a fantastic match up and could see Henderson avenge his loss.

(Photo Courtesy of Cheryl Wilson, Flickr)</dd></dl></div>
<p style="text-align: left">For the first since the very beginning of the season, the Rockies and Diamondbacks will face one another, this time with games being played at Chase Field. Colorado comes in with one of the best records in baseball at 17-9 while Arizona is three games under .500 and 5.5 games behind the division leading Rockies.<!--more--></p>
Here are the pitching matchups for the three-game series.

<strong>Jorge De La Rosa</strong> <em>(4-0, 2.61 ERA) </em>vs. <strong>Joe Saunders </strong><em>(0-3, 5.93 ERA)</em>

<strong>Jhoulys Chacin </strong><em>(3-2, 2.91 ERA)</em> vs. <strong>Barry Enright </strong><em>(1-2, 5.76 ERA)</em>

<strong>Jason Hammel</strong> <em>(3-1, 3.23 ERA) </em>vs. <strong>Armando Galarraga</strong><em> (3-2, 5.46 ERA)</em>

Whenever you think of successful Rockies teams in past seasons, you always look to their offense, but it has been their pitching so far this season that has been really impressive, all of this coming with <strong>Ubaldo Jimenez </strong>struggling in his first four starts. The ace of the staff is winless with an ERA over seven. Jimenez won't be pitching in this series.

De La Rosa, Chacin and Hammel have more than made up for Jimenez's strugggles in the first monthof the season. All three feature ERA's well below their career averages. De La Rosa, who will be Colorado's starter tonight, probably has the best stuff of the bunch averaging nearly a strikeout per inning.

Their bullpen has been suberb as well. Except for <strong>Felipe Paulino</strong>, every member of Colorado's pen has an ERA under four. <strong>Huston Street </strong>has yet to blown a save in 10 chances and the foursome of <strong>Rafael Betancourt</strong>, <strong>Franklin Morales</strong>, <strong>Matt Lindstrom </strong>and <strong>Matt Reynolds </strong>have done a great job of getting the ball to Street with a lead in the late innings.

With their pitching carrying the way, Colorado's offense has really struggled during the first month of the season. The Rockies are hitting a poor .237 so far, 22nd best in all of baseball. They are 29th in hits, 10th in runs and tied for 15th in hitting balls out of the park.

The Rockies offensive struggles begin with their superstar outfielder <strong>Carlos Gonzalez</strong>, who is hitting just .232 with only one home run. <strong>Chris Iannetta </strong>and <strong>Jose Lopez </strong>have yet to hit as well. All three are two good of hitters to continue struggling like this, especcially Gonzo. Cross your fingersthat they don't get hot during these three games in Phoenix.

World Series Of Fighting 3 featured a compelling welterweight bout between Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman. Coming into this fight, Fitch already had a victory over Burkman, where he was able to submit him back in 2006.

Just under a minute in the first round, Burkman was able to land straights, wobbling Fitch, who tried to shoot for a takedown. But Burkman as able to lock on a guillotine, Fitch didn’t defend it correctly, and he was out within a few seconds. Burkman let the choke go as he knew Fitch was unconscious, which is commendable on his part.

Burkman has now won five straight over some durable fighters in Fitch and Aaron Simpson. It’s remarkable to see Burkman putting everything together, and it will be interesting to see where he goes from here. Maybe a transition back into the UFC is the most logical move for him, as he has now put two former UFC fighters and in devastating fashion.

This is a demoralizing loss for Fitch, as he has never been submitted prior to this fight. Fitch has always prided himself on his submission defense, but he certainly had a mental lapse against Burkman. He should have defended the choke once it was applied, but instead tried get Burkman to the mat, allowing him to secure the guillotine tightly.

He has now lost three out of his last four fights, and will need to come back stronger than ever if he wants to continue fighting at the highest level.

<p style="text-align: left">The Diamondbacks placed right-hander <strong>Aaron Heilman</strong> on the 15-day disabled list on Friday and called up right-hander <strong>Josh Collmenter</strong> from Triple A, to replace him on the roster.</p>
Heilman has been hit hard in four outings so far in the season. The veteran has allowed 13 hits and nine earned runs in only 6 2/3 innings. He is coming off of an outing on Wednesday against St. Louis, where he gave up seven hits and 6 earned runs in 1 2/3 innings in the Diamondbacks 15-5 loss.<!--more-->

Collmenter has spent his entire pro career down in the minors. Over the course of five seasons, he has a very respectable 41-27 record with a 3.50 ERA in 92 starts. The 25-year-old is coming off of a start on April 10 with Reno, where he allowed only two earned over six innings.

The now big leaguer will be strictly used as a long relief guy and occasional spot starter if needed by manager <strong>Kirk Gibson</strong>.

In one of the only interesting story lines remaining in a card which has been riddled with injuries, Jake Shields is likely fighting for his UFC career at UFC 161.

Since entering the UFC in 2010, Shields has been a huge disappointment. The former Strikeforce middleweight champion entered MMA‘s biggest promotion riding a 14-fight winning streak and had just dominated UFC-veteran Dan Henderson in a five-round fight.

After being given a quick title shot against UFC welterweight champion George St. Pierre, Shields’ career began an unexpected free-fall.

Shields followed an ugly loss to St. Pierre with an even uglier loss to Jake Ellenberger, in a fight which Shields was knocked out in less than a minute by an Ellenberger punch. Shields Followed that loss with a controversial win over Yoshihiro Akiyama and then grinded out an extremely boring win over Ed Herman. After the Herman fight, however, Shield’s victory was turned into a no-contest after a failed drug test.

Now, at UFC 161, Shields finds himself fighting for his UFC career against Tyon Woodley.

In contrast to Shields, Woodley has found early success in the UFC. In February, Woodley entered the Octagon for the first time and quickly finished Jay Hieron by way of a devastating knockout punch. Woodley’s dynamic debut lasted only 36 seconds.

Shields, whose chin appeared suspect in the Ellenberger knockout, must find a way to cope with Woodley’s power. Shields must use his superior grappling to grind out a win against the powerful welterweight.

If Shields fails and gets knocked out again, he will find himself without a job by the time his medical suspension expires.

It's tough to ridicule a loss against the Celtics when you're the New Jersey Nets these days, but the fact is this; they blew another double digit lead that led to a loss. Even so, they played well considering they were coming off an overtime win against the Hawks the night before and had their work cut out for them playing on the second night of a back to back on the road against the favorite to come out of the east in the Boston Celtics.

Anthony Morrow is playing his best stretch of basketball of this young season so far, but again when he scores over 17 points a game the Nets are now 1-4. Translation: When Morrow is taking more than 10 shots a game the Nets lose. Morrow, to his credit, is playing well, but I'm not sure Anthony Morrow taking more than 10 shots a game is going to help your team win in this league. I've said this all along, the Nets need Morrow to shoot around 6-8 shots a game and hit the open three while contributing in other areas. Eight out of the Nets 15 games this season Morrow has had more combined fouls and turnovers then rebounds, assists, and steals. Many games he out totaled fouls and turnovers by one or two. <em>Um, Hello </em>he should never be outnumbered by fouls and turnovers!

Brook Lopez had a game he'd like to forget. Not only did he score 14 points and grab only 5 rebounds, he contributed to letting Shaquille O'Neal revert back to 2000 Shaq and score 25 points and collect 11 boards. By the way, who would of ever thought in 2011 we would be contributing a loss to the fact that Shaq had 25 and 11 while leading all scorers? He more then doubled Brook Lopez rebounding production on the night while playing six less minutes.

Devin Harris played well scoring 20 points while dishing out 5 dimes, but battled through foul trouble contributing to him playing only 31 minutes. Jordan Farmar didn't shoot the ball well but had 7 assists. This guy needs to be the starting point guard. The Nets are so much better with him and Harris in the back court with Morrow coming off the bench providing a spark. Nothing is better in the NBA than having a guy that can come off the bench and hit you a couple threes going up against other teams second units.

Even though the Nets lost this game, the Celtics "big three" struggled and I'm contributing some of that to the Nets defense, but let's not kid ourselves Rajon Rondo sat this game out. He is the key, the orchestrator, of this offense and often times leads his teammates to easy buckets. I think we all see how much he means to them when the Celtics struggle against a lower team like the Nets without him. In fact the Nets probably lose this game by 15 if he's playing.

Overall I loved the effort the Nets displayed while hanging with the big boys of the east on the second night of a back to back on the road. The Nets play Saturday against the bottom dwellers of the league in the Philadelphia 76ers. Although it's on the road the Nets have no excuse for losing that game as they have ample time to rest and clearly have a superior roster. Predictions to come Friday, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

A pivotal featherweight title fight was expected to take place between current champ Jose Aldo and top-contender Anthony Pettis. This fight was pegged to be a super-fight, as Pettis was arguably the best lightweight in the UFC save for Ben Henderson, who he holds a win over back in the WEC promotion.

However, an injury suffered from Pettis has forced him out of the bout, leaving him and many fans distraught. Now, Chan Sung Jung, Korean Zombie, will take his place for UFC 163. Here is Dana White on Twitter earlier today:

Pettis hurt his knee, Korean Zombie will now face Jose Aldo for the title on the Aug card in Rio Brazil.

Jung, who sports an overall record of 13-3, was originally scheduled to Ricardo Lamas, which would determine the next No. 1 contender in the division. Instead, the UFC opted to give Jung a shot at the belt, and it will be interesting to see if he can make the most out of his title shot opportunity.

This is devastating news for Pettis, as he was looking to be the first man to dethrone Aldo in the UFC. Now, he will have to rehab is injury, and he more than likely is going to be fighting in the lightweight division again, where he is one of the best fighters. Injuries are a part of the sport, and hopefully Pettis can heal up quickly and get back to his training.

So will The Korean Zombie pull off an incredible upset, or will Aldo demolish Jung like he has done to all of his other opponents? Stay tuned!

The Diamondbacks got a solid outing out of newcomer <strong>Armando Galarraga</strong> and the offense finally showed some early life in their 6-4 victory over the Cubs in Chicago.

Arizona's new looked lineup jumped early on Cubs starter <strong>Ryan Dempster</strong> with a two-run third inning. <strong>Chris Young</strong>, hitting in the two-hole, knocked a liner to center field that got past <strong>Marlon Byrd</strong> and rolled all the way to the wall. Young would come all the way around to score thanks to a throwing error from <strong>Alfonso Soriano</strong> to give the road team an early 2-0 lead.<!--more-->

Chicago would tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run shot off the bat of <strong>Aramis Ramirez</strong>, but the Snakes would retake the lead in the top half of the fifth. Two singles in the inning from <strong>Willie Bloomquist </strong>and Young would score two and then <strong>Kelly Johnson</strong> would get a RBI double to close out the three-run inning for Arizona. It was only the fourth hit and first RBI for KJ on the young season.

The two teams would trade runs the rest of the way on a pair of solo home runs from Soriano and <strong>Miguel Montero</strong> and then a <strong>Tyler Colvin</strong> RBI groundout would draw his Cubbies within two, but <strong>Juan Gutierrez</strong> and <strong>J.J. Putz </strong>would shut shut things down for the final six outs. Gutierrez's solid inning has to do wonders for his confidence as he struggled throughout the spring and wasn't good in his first outing of the 2011 campaign. Putz is now a perfect 2-for-2 in save chances, something that we rarely saw last season.

Galarraga was good in his D'Backs debut. He didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and made only two mistakes the entire afternoon, the home runs to Ramirez and Soriano. It is a good start for a guy that really struggled during the second half of last season while in Detroit.

A light heavyweight title fight is in the works for UFC 165 between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. This news comes via Ariel Helwani on Twitter:

Dana: Jones vs Gustafsson is going down in Toronto in September.

This will be the first-ever title shot for Gustafsson, who has looked incredible as of late. He is currently on a six-fight winning streak, sporting a 15-1 overall record. His lone loss came at the hands of Phil Davis, who is a competent MMA fighter in his own right. In his UFC tenure, he has beaten the likes of Thiago Silva, Shogun Rua, James Te Huna, and Cyrille Diabate.

Jones comes into this fight with an incredible record of 18-1. He has defeated tough fighters in Lyoto Machida, Shogun Rua, Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson. No one has been able to figure him out, and he is one of the most dominant champions in UFC history. Many consider him to be top three on the pound-for-pound list, and it will be interesting to see how he fares against Gustafsson, who shares a similar reach advantage over many opponents he faces.

In terms of the style match up, Gustafsson is just as big as Jones, and it will be interesting to see how this plays out when they square off. Jones is the superior wrestler, which has been his bread-and-butter in his most recent fights. Regardless of the outcome, it’s an excellent title fight, which should take place around September.

As I wrote<a title="rule change" href="http://www.rantsports.com/redzonetalk/category/afc/afc-south/indianapolis-colts/" target="_blank"> in this column </a>on Friday after watching the Green Bay Packers destroy the Indianapolis Colts 59-24, the new rule change in the NFL regarding the positioning of the umpire will cost the Indianapolis Colts games this season. Now, former Colts head coach Tony Dungy agrees. When speaking on the threat of the no-huddle offense <a title="colts woes" href="http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/08/30/tony-dungy-illegal-snap-rule-will-hinder-no-huddle-offenses/" target="_blank">Dungy commented, </a>"If that threat is going to be gone, that certainly will take a lot away from not only the Colts, but anybody trying to run the no-huddle."

The switch of the umpire from the defense to the offensive side of the ball was innocuous in the offseason. But after watching the Colts on Friday night, I can see this rule costing the Colts 1 perhaps 2 games in 2010. Manning runs perhaps the best no-huddle offense in the league, reminiscent of what Jim Kelly did with the Buffalo Bills in the 1990's during their Super Bowl runs.

I am not quite sure why the rule was implemented this season, but for all the rhetoric being spoken by the owners of wanting to "enhance" the NFL season, this rule takes away from the game. And if the rule is so important, and such a good change, why does it not apply during the final two minutes of each half?

The entire premise of the no-huddle offense, when executed perfectly, is to not allow the defense to adjust by making substitutions to get a rest. This rule doesn't eliminate the no-huddle, but it certainly now gives the opposing defenses a little more advantage to set up and be prepared. 3-4 seconds doesn't sound like a lot of time, but when you are lining up an offense, that's an eternity. Mark my words, this rule will cost the Colts a game or two this season.

UFC 161 features a pivotal light heavyweight bout between heavy-hitters Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson. Both fighters are fighting for their relevancy in the division and are coming off losses, so their will to win will be at an all-time high.

Coming into this bout, Evans sports an overall record of 17-3-1. In his UFC tenure, he has beaten the likes of Rampage Jackson, Forrest Griffin, Tito Ortiz and Phil Davis. He is a former light heavyweight champion, and is coming off of two deflating losses to Jon Jones and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. If Evans wants to remain relevant in the division in hopes of getting another shot at the belt, then he will need to have a sterling performance this weekend.

Henderson comes into this bout with a record of 29-9. He is a former Pride and Strikeforce champion, and has beat notable fighters in Fedor Emelianenko, Shogun Rua, Michael Bisping, Rich Franklin, Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort. Despite being 42 years old, he has been able to hang with the best of them, and still has been able to show his knockout power. The question is, can he land his heavy punches on Evans who also has power in his hands?

Evans is one of the best MMA wrestlers in the division, and he will need to use his speed to force Henderson off his game. If he can do this, then he has a very good shot at winning. For Henderson, he needs to keep the fight standing and look to land power shots on Evans, who has been knocked out in the past.

<em>*See how the Mariners measure up against A.L. West rival:</em><a href="http://fantasy.rantsports.com/2011/06/09/team-fantasy-quotient-l-a-angels-of-anaheim/"> Angels Quotient Anaheim</a>, <a href="http://fantasy.rantsports.com/?p=2269">Rangers Quotient</a>, <a href="http://fantasy.rantsports.com/2011/06/29/fantasy-quotient-oakland-athletics/">A's Quotient</a>

Seattle is the incredible case of two extremes. Great starting pitching, atrocious lineup. Let's take a look at what that equates to in the Mariner's Fantasy Quotient. In fact the Mariners light hitting ways make Quotient history.

<strong>Outfield:</strong>

There is no usable players in the Mariners outfield. Even Ichiro is having a down season. The usually 200 hit shoe-in has dramatically under performed, and is useful only if your team desperately need steals.

Greg Halman has performed admirably in limited action but he still cannot be used in good faith in any format.

The outfield cupboard is bare in Seattle.

<strong>First Base:</strong>

Adam Kennedy has a better shot of joining his unrelated surname sharing family in politics, then contributing anything to your team.

<strong>Second Base: </strong>

The light-hitting rookie second baseman (Dustin Ackley) hit third last night. Typical Mariners.

<strong>Shortstop:</strong>

Brandon Ryan the quirky former Cardinal can really field... Did I mention he can field? Not worth a second look in fantasy.

<strong>Third Base:</strong>

One of the worst long term contracts in the game was given to former Angels third baseman Chone Figgins. Zero fantasy value yet again. Poor Mariners...

<strong>Catcher:</strong>

No way we man have something here in Mariners catcher Miguel Olivo! Okay not totally the Seattle backstop is hitting an unsightly .227 this season. He has hit 12 home runs and swiped a couple of bags. He is fringe at best which makes him a superstar in Seattle... Yikes.

Utility:

The once highly touted Justin Smoak was supposed to have it figured out to some degree by now. He doesn't. As they say, where there's Smoak, there's another punchless Mariner.

Starting 5:

Despite historic levels lot of nothing in their lineup, the Mariners have managed to stay in the thick of the A.L. West most of the season until their current 6 game slide put them in third place and eight and a half games out. How is that possible? Well the Mariners have a stacked pitching staff that can beat you any given night with little run support. Reigning Cy Young award winner King Felix Hernandez isn't having the season he did last year but still putting up remarkable stats. Rookie Michael Pineda made the All-Star team for the A.L. and is having an incredible year. Peter Gammons tweeted that his sources say he may be even <em>better</em> than Hernandez one day.

Now <em>that</em> would be something. Pineda has been a huge addition to many fantasy teams. Finally the renaissance of Erik Bedard has been a great story. Bedard, after spending one and a half injury mired seasons in Seattle, was performing impeccably before taking yet another precautionary trip to the D.L. Bedard should return in late July and the flame thrower is worth a look if an owner in your league elects to drop him for healthier options.

<strong>Bullpen: </strong>

Brandon League is good option for saves as the Mariners excellent starters and lack of hitters give him plenty of close games to pitch in. So far he has 23 saves. His ERA, WHIP, and K's have all been at or above the league average.

<strong>Overall:</strong>

The Mariners starting pitching is astoundingly good. But as good as the staff has been the Mariners have been ever more horrible then the starters have been good. The Mariners play to the strengths of their ballpark and good for them but you still have to score if you expect to win, or in this case score high on Rant's Quotient.

<strong>Mariners Quotient: 39/100</strong>

A pivotal welterweight bout takes place this weekend for UFC 161 between Jake Shields and Tyron Woodley. Both of these fighters are vying to move up the welterweight rankings, where Georges St. Pierre is currently at the top.

Coming into this bout, Shields sports an overall record of 27-6-1-1. He is the former Strikeforce middleweight champion, holding notable victories over Dan Henderson, Jason Miller, and Robbie Lawler. A win over Woodley would be a huge feather in his cap, and would put him right back in the mix in this heavily competitive division.

Since coming into the UFC, Shields hasn’t been too consistent. His worst defeat to date was against Jake Ellenberger, where Ellenberger was able to knock him out in the first round. He will be looking to put all of the losses and controversies behind him when he squares off against Woodley.

Woodley comes into this bout with an overall record of 11-1. His lone defeat came at the hands of Nate Marquardt, who was able to KO Woodley in the fourth round. Soon after this loss, Woodley made his UFC debut, where he would end up getting the KO against a very game Jay Hieron. Woodley has always been an incredible wrestler inside the cage, but his hands look to be improving with every fight. He has knockout power in his hands, making him a stern test for any fighter in the division.

Both fighters have well-rounded grappling games, where Shields likes to use his American jiu jitsu style to stifle his opponents. Similarly, Woodley likes to smother his opponents from the top, and it will be interesting to see if he can avoid the submission attack of Shields.

UFC on Fuel TV 10 kicked off this weekend and featured an important heavyweight bout between TUF 2 Brazil coaches Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. This card was historic in that there were over eight submissions on the card, showcasing some amazing jiu jitsu and grappling skills from elite level fighters. Let’s now take a look and see who the winners and losers of the card were.

Winners

Fabricio Werdum: Werdum is the biggest winner coming out of the event. He had a lot to lose in this bout against Nogueira and not a lot to gain. Werdum seemed to fade in the first but battled right back in the second, locking on an armbar that forced Nogueira to tap out verbally. It was a huge feather in his cap and solidified his status as being the next number one contender in the division. Now he will more than likely face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez 3.

Erick Silva: Coming into his bout with Jason High, Silva was looking to make a statement. Prior to this fight, Silva was beaten down badly by Jon Fitch, who is now fighting under the World Series Of Fighting banner. In the first round, High looked to shoot, which proved to be costly as Silva was able to take the back. Then, he would lock up an impressive armbar, finishing High in the first round. It was a much-needed win for Silva, and he is right back in the mix of things in this heavily competitive welterweight division.

Losers

Rafael Cavalcante: Rafael is one of the biggest losers from the event. In his bout with Thiago Silva, he started off strong, landing some good combinations that kept Silva at bay. However, he seemed to gas after a while, which allowed Silva to press him up against the cage. From there, Silva landed a devastating uppercut that sent Rafael to the canvas. This was Rafael’s first fight under the UFC banner, and he will need to work on his cardio if he ever wants to make his mark in the division.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: This is a pretty disappointing loss for Nogueira, especially in his home country of Brazil. Nogueira has always been one of the best heavyweights in terms of jiu jitsu, and it’s tough to see him get submitted by an even better jiu jitsu practitioner. This is more than likely his last fight, which is a shame as it would have been nice to seem him go out with a win.

I was watching the Chicago White Sox take on the Minnesota Twins. There was one play during the game that stood out to me. It bothered me in a way as well.

The Twins were leading 4-3 going into the bottom of the 11th. Mark Kotsay led off the inning by striking out. Then Alex Rios followed with a single. This is where my problem begins. I’m generally against the idea of trying to steal bases. I get the idea of trying to get into scoring position, but for me I think there is too much risk involved.

<div style="float:right;margin-left:5px"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=stolen base&iid=4998335" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/3/5/a/e/MLB_Oakland_Athletics_ac50.JPG?adImageId=12421312&imageId=4998335" width="234" height="160" border="0" alt="MLB: Oakland Athletics at Los Angeles Dodgers" /></a></div>According to “The Book” by Tom Tango a runner on first base with 1 out the team has a run expectancy of .573 runs per inning. Alex Rios attempted to steal 2nd base. He was thrown out. Now they have no men on with 2 out. A team can be expected to score an average of .117 runs per inning. Him being thrown out the expected number of runs decreased by .456 runs. Even if Rios was safe he only increased the expected number of runs by .152 per inning. On average stolen bases are worth only .174 runs and getting caught stealing is worth -.467 runs. I think this shows that the risk is worth more than the reward in regards to stealing bases.

To make matters worse Omar Vizquel followed with a single. I know you can’t assume Vizquel gets the same pitch, but for arguments sake they could have men on first and second with 1 out. A team can be expected to score an average of .971 runs per inning. Based on the percentages it’s likely the Sox tie the game if they don’t attempt to steal second base and Vizquel still gets on.

My point is not to criticize Ozzie Guillen or the Sox, but it’s to show that there is risk involved in trying to steal bases. If the Sox or any other team hopes to win they should be more careful on the base paths. I think most teams would be better off playing the percentages.

Home field advantage is often talked about in team sports. MMA is no different.

Jason High, Eddie Mendez, and Anthony Smith were the only Americans featured on UFC on Fuel TV 10. The three promising American fighters entered into Saturday’s event with a combined record of 39-15-1.

All three hot prospects, however, were submitted in less than three minutes by their Brazilian opponents.

High, Mendez, and Smith were not alone in their struggles on foreign soil. The other four non-Brazilians on the card were all defeated, including heavy-hitting middleweight Karlos Vemola.

This was not the first time Americans have struggled fighting in Brazil. In May, UFC on FX 8 was held in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil. That event featured three American contenders in the main card: Luke Rockhold, Chris Camozzi, and Evan Dunham. In that event, all three Americans were also defeated by their Brazilian opponents.

For American fighters fighting in Brazil, the strain of the long travel and unavailability of specific dietary needs certainly prove to be hardships. The native Brazilian crowd, however, is the main disadvantage for foreign fighters. The crowds are electric and consistently provide the home fighter extra motivation. Brazilian arenas are intimidating places for American fighters to enter.

The UFC travels back to Brazil for UFC 163. This time, three of MMA’s most prolific Americans will be featured on the main card. If rumors are accurate, Anthony Pettis, Phil Davis, and Josh Koscheck will all be featured on the event’s main card. All three are contenders in their weight classes, and all three are fighting tough Brazilian opponents.

If the recent trend of Brazilian domination on home soil continues, Pettis, Davis, and Koscheck will soon regret their decisions to agree to fight in Brazil.

The Diamondbacks signed reliever <a href="http://www.rototimes.com/mlb/player/648">Mike Hampton</a> to a one-year contract on Wednesday. The contract is a Minor League deal that includes an invite to Spring Training.<!--more-->

Hampton was signed by Arizona last August after coming back from rotator cuff surgery and he became a pretty nice weapon in the bullpen to close out the season. In 10 appearances, the 38-year-old didn't allow a run in 4 1/3 innings. Right now, Hampton and <a href="http://www.rototimes.com/mlb/player/7856">Jordan Norberto</a> are the only two lefties out of the bullpen.

Arizona is also close on a deal with <a href="http://www.rototimes.com/mlb/player/2399">Henry Blanco</a> to be their backup catcher behind <a href="http://www.rototimes.com/mlb/player/5932">Miguel Montero</a>. The 39-year-old spent last season in a New York Mets uniform where he hit .215 in 130 at-bats. He may not have a great bat, but he is a great veteran presence in the clubhouse and would do wonders with a young pitching staff.
