Hockey World Championship Update: May 6
For the two Boston Bruins at the IIHF Hockey World Championship, this weekend wasn’t too great–both Slovakia and Czech Republic lost their games.
Zdeno Chara and the Slovakian team lost 1-0 to Finland. In host country Finland’s second 1-o win, the only goal needed was provided by Janne Pesonen. Though Slovakia outshot Finland for much of the game, they just could not beat Petri Vehanen. Slovakia took five different penalties, including a slashing call on Chara, while Finland took two penalties overall. This lopsidedness was something Chara mentioned specifically in postgame interviews–he took exception to it and thought some calls went unmade. However, on the other hand, Chara led the team in ice time and took four shots on goal. This feature about his role as team captain is also worth a read, written by a Finnish journalist at the tournament who also wrote a funny blog post (“Reaching for the stars“) about how his height difference with Chara affects how he does his job of interviewing him.
David Krejci and the Czech team were defeated 4-1 by Sweden. Johan Franzen, Niklas Kronwall, Joel Lundqvist and Niklas Persson scored for Sweden–Henrik Zetterberg providing the assist on the first two goals meant a lot of Detroit Red Wings provided offense in this contest–while Jakub Petruzalek kept Sweden from recording a shutout. Krejci’s contributions were to win 75 percent of his faceoffs, take one shot on goal and stay out of the penalty box this time.
