Boston Celtics Ray Allen Has A Clear Mind And A Pure Shot: Why His Season Will Be Better Than 2010
[picappgallerysingle id="9142442"]Last season was not a great season for Ray Allen. The man that has one of the sweetest shots to ever grace the NBA was just not quite himself. Ray usually will go into a mini funk, but he seemed off for a good portion of the season. The injuries to his teammates also made his space to shoot shrink. His scoring averages were down and he seemed distracted. However, Ray got it together in time for a big playoff run. This year will be different. Here are my three reasons why Ray will have a tremendous NBA season.
1. Clear Mind Equals Clear Shot.
The fact that Ray’s future was laced with uncertainty was a major factor in his decline in production. To shoot with that kind of precession requires total concentration and a clear mind is the fuel that drives that precession. Think Tiger Woods playing golf. Woods is the same physically gifted player he has always been. However, his personal life is a wreck. The result is his game is greatly affected to the effects on his mind. Not knowing where is he was going to be playing next this late in his career is a big time issue. Ray loved playing in Boston. The team was winning and he liked his teammates. Having struggled for so long in Seattle and Milwaukee, this was heaven to Ray. The fact that Ray’s family fell in love with Boston and wanted no part in leaving had to weigh heavy as well. Ray’s son that is diabetic is getting the best care in the world in Boston’s world class medical facilities. The school systems are great and the man has always loved the North East. The thought of possibly ripping himself and his family away from all these comforts was not sitting well. The worst part was that he could be leaving in the form of a trade last year. This meant he could leave a situation he loved for another like the Sacramento Kings. Why would a man like Ray look to leave a winning situation for a young team still rebuilding? The thoughts and rumors weighed heavily on Ray and his shot was not as sharp. The fact he got it together after the trade deadline should be zero surprise.
This year will be very different. Ray is armed with a two year deal. This means that he is safe from thoughts of departure. The only aspect Ray must worry about is getting his body and shooting form ready for an NBA season. Ray has always been in great physical condition so no issues there. Ray armed with a clear mind should rebound and be even better a shooter than he was post trade deadline.
2. The Team Should Be Healthier.
The spacing that KG and Paul Pierce provide Ray Allen is crucial to his open looks. When Pierce and KG went down to injuries it affected Ray’s game. The fact that KG was not the same player for the most of the season hurt his game. Teams did not need to give KG the defensive attention that he normally requires. Pierce was not as explosive with various foot injuries. That meant more defensive attention to Ray Allen. The results were less space and time to shoot.
This year KG is healthy going in to training camp. He is a year removed from injury and looks like he will regain some of the form that caused him to be one of the dominant forces in the NBA. Pierce has worked hard on both conditioning and strengthening his injured foot. This should make both healthier for the NBA 2011 season. This means more open looks and space for Sugar Ray.
3. Rondo Is Better.
As Rondo becomes better, so do his teammates. Rondo will create more opportunities for Ray to score. The more attention Rondo requires, the less that a team can spend on Ray. Rondo has armed himself with a new jump shot. If Rondo starts knocking down jumpers, then doubles will follow. If double teams follow, then Ray will feast on open looks from long range.
2010 had many ups and downs for Ray Allen. The season was still relatively successful going to the NBA Finals. With these improvements the Celtics will get more out of their ageless shooter. If the team gets more out of Ray than this team will celebrating in June. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!
