I preface this article with the following fact: I love Kendrick Perkins as a player. Perkins has been the anchor of the Boston Celtics defense in the paint for years. He sacrifices his offense and focuses on being the best defender and rebounder that he can be. However, Kendrick Perkins is a man doing a lot of talking. He is coming across as a guy trying to defend his right to his spot on this team. Looking at Danny Ainge’s recent moves and the team’s early success, he may be right.
This preseason has been very impressive for the people replacing Perkins thus far. Shaq has proven to be a beast in the middle on offense. He scores at will off the easy passes that Rondo feeds him. He also looks quite mobile and active in the paint of defense. He is in shape and looks great. Jermaine O’Neal has only played limited minutes. However, during those limited minutes he has been very impressive. He has shown a nose for rebounds and blocks. When his offense comes back close to form, he will be a legit low post scoring threat off the bench. Semhi Erden has also impressed. The rookie has shown tremendous poise and is fundamentally sound at both ends of the floor. Combined all three are very impressive and only making 7.5 million a year combined.
Let us state the fact that Kendrick Perkins is a free agent after this year. He is young and has a lot of solid years ahead of him. Guys like Noah in Chicago and Tyson Chandler are making 10 plus million a year. Heck, even Brendan Heywood is making almost 7 million. They are all providing similar numbers to Kendrick Perkins. Two important questions are here. Number one is Danny Ainge going to want to spend that much money on Perkins with cheaper options out there? The other is Kendrick Perkins going to take a discount to stay in Boston if that is the only way he stays.
I love Kendrick Perkins. The man does bring so much to the Celtics. He has given his body and soul to this team’s defense. Danny Ainge and Kendrick Perkins will have some very tough decisions to make. The question is beginning to burn, Is Perkins a Celtic after this year?

I love Kendrick Perkins,but I don’t think he and Davis will be back in Boston next year.This is unfortunate because the veterans has just a few more years left.Perk and Davis will follow the money trail.Davis will no longer have to wonder what his role will be.These guys will get bigger contracts and have starting positions.The question is where does this leave us…
You never know stranger things have happened. If a ring occurs than maybe Greener pastures are not in order for these men. They both will need to take below the highest offer. Stay tuned.

Are you kidding me?! This ad is totally bogus. Kendrick Perkins not only is the Captain of the defense but he is the only true low post defender we have who doesn’t mind sacrificing every game. Without Perk, guys like KG could not roam the perimiter on D. Without Perk, we have no answer to Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum even some of the older centers. He not only plays D, but he knows how to switch, set bone-crushing picks for our guards, and PROTECT THE PAINT. We saw how critical he is to this team when he was hurt in Game 7 vs. LA. If this team lets Kendrick Perkins get away it will be a MAJOR mistake.
As for Big Baby…. I would sign him to an extension (for more $) and then trade him. He makes only $4 Million and the Celtics wont get equal value. Let another team with Cap space overpay him and give us players in return. We know Baby will never be happy with his role in Boston because he believes he should be a starter…….
I am not disputing anything you say. However, cap space and price might force the man out of town. Are Jermaine, Shaq, and Semhi for the same price of Perkins a better fit in Danny’s mind?
eh, i dont worry bout things like this cus who knows how it’ll play out. I gotta say though, i am really lovin seein rondo’s quick passes into the paint go to some use, instead of gettin dropped or goin to waste cus perk took too long to gather and gets blocked or takes a bad shot. That bein said, we should do everythin reasonable to keep him after this year, cus there’s no replacin a #1 post defender. i think danny knows how important he is so dont sweat it. He’ll prob still be around.
