The Boston Celtics Kevin Garnett Will Play Better
The stats of one Kevin Garnett tell a very grim story of how his season has gone. The once dominant player is averaging career lows in scoring with 13.3 points on only 46 percent shooting. He has had some foul shooting nights recently like his 5-19 performance against the Thunder, the 4-11 shooting against Dallas, and the 4-11 shooting against Chicago. The result has left many in Boston to question what he has left in the tank. Those people were also the same people that questioned KG in 2010 after an abysmal regular season. KG would then rally the troops to an improbable playoff march to the Finals.
My answer to that question is very simple. KG is still a guy that can help a team win regardless of his offensive output. His defensive prowess alone makes him indispensable. KG despite his offensive struggles still manages to make life miserable for the man he is guarding. Dirk Nowitzki may have hit the game winning shot on a drive over KG, but most of the game KG held him in check. KG also does a tremendous job in the help defense and rotates perfectly to his spot to make the paint a lot smaller.
However, his offense is never going to be what it was in 08. KG was an absolute beast on the offensive end. He was just so quick that he could blow by his man and score on isolations, sneak by his man for an ally oop dunk, score off the turn around in the paint, and hit his sweet 17 foot jump shot. The knee injury robbed KG of his explosiveness.
These facts do not mean that KG will not get better offensively as the season goes on. KG is missing a lot of shots that he would normally hit. He just does not seem to have a feel for his shot. His usually automatic jump shot has been awful. KG also just does not have the touch on his shots in the post. The fact is KG is too good a scorer to not regain his touch as the season moves on.
The team missed training camp and has had to deal with a lot of the new faces. The team needs KG to anchor the defense to give this team any shot at winning. This means this has been where is focus is. KG is trying to get these guys like Brandon Bass and Greg Stiemsma ready to contribute. As these guys start to get it and KG gets his legs back, his shot will begin to drop. My money is on that happening sooner than later. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!!!!
