2010 Boston Red Sox Would Have Made Playoffs Under Revised Format
Bud Selig plans to expand Major League Baseball’s playoff system next season by adding a Wild Card team in each league.
The move would increase the total number of playoff teams from eight to 10, bringing it closer to the postseason percentage of the NFL (in which 12 of the 32 teams make the playoffs).
The injury-riddled 2010 Red Sox finished with the fifth best record in the American League and would have qualified for the playoffs if this new format was already in place.
Instead, Terry Francona’s club missed the postseason for just the second time since 2002.
Here’s who would have earned a trip to the AL playoffs in each of the last five seasons:
2010: Boston Red Sox (89-73)
2009: Texas Rangers (87-75)
2008: New York Yankees (89-73)
2007: Detroit Tigers / Seattle Mariners (88-74)
2006: Chicago White Sox (90-72)
