The Red Sox have a full 40 man roster at this point, so with the addition of the newly signed Cody Ross, someone had to go. It will be right-handed reliever Scott Atchison. The 35 year old pitcher will now have to clear waivers to remain in the Red Sox employ. Atchison has been a solid though unspectacular pitcher in Boston these past two seasons and it would not be surprising if any team needing an extra arm in the bullpen or starting pitcher depth picks him up. As a Red Sox, he has a decent 4.08 ERA and a good 2.32 K/BB rate, while moving back and forth between AAA and working in long relief. Should Atchison clear waivers, he will return to AAA Pawtucket as part of the vast hordes of pitching depth to be kept there in wait. He has cleared waivers in the past, so he could certainly clear again and find his way back onto the big league roster.

Atchison returned to baseball in the US after two seasons in Japan’s NPL with the Hanshin Tigers. He returned to the U.S. primarily to gain access to better medical treatment for his daughter Callie, who was diagnosed with thrombocytopenia-absent radius (TAR), a rare genetic disorder that has left her with out the radius bone in her arms. In his time with the Red Sox, Atchison made one start in place of Daisuke Matsuzaka and has throw 90 innings for the team at the major league level and 74.2 innings atAAA.

With Atchison off the 40 man roster, Boston can now complete the deal with Cody Ross. Ross and the team had agreed to a $3M one year contract, but his signing had been delayed by the roster crunch the Sox are now in. As the team continues to build, it will have to place other players like Michael Bowden or Darnell MacDonald on waivers. For this reason, it seems logical to expect another trade in Boston’s future. Even if the team were to sign Roy Oswalt or Edwin Jackson, they may be motivated to move another player or two to avoid chancing placing anyone too valuable on the waiver wire.
