Report: Minnesota Twins Close to Signing Josh Willingham
Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE

In baseball, there are a lot of good players, but traditional fans haven’t heard of them. This is why a match of Josh Willingham and the Minnesota Twins are a perfect.

Willingham has been one of the most consistent run producers the past five years. A career slash line of .262/.361/.475/.836 is pretty darn impressive for a guy who’s played in canyons like Pro Player, Nationals Park, and the Oakland Coliseum. The Twins are between a rock and a hard place right now. They are being bit by the free agent and recovering injury bug.

The Twinkies were able to re-sign Matt Capps to a 4.5 million dollar contract; however, Joe Nathan bolted, and Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer are expected to go elsewhere.

As far as injuries, Mauer played half the year, Morneau might very well turn into a Sidney Crosby situation, and Denard Span had nagging injuries for all of 2011. Going into 2012, there is not one sure thing about the Minnesota Twins. Josh Willingham would be that sure thing.

Willingham is basically Kubel. Possibly a better version of Kubel. Sandwiching him between Mauer and Morneau, if those guys are healthy, is a pretty potent 2-3-4.

What is even better for the Twins is that if Cuddyer and Kubel are let go, they will receive draft pick compensation, and not have to give up any for Willingham.

Overall, it’s a very encouraging move for a team to sign a 121 OPS+ right-handed hitting bat when it’s in desperate need of one.
