Can Jamie Moyer make an MLB roster at age 49?
Jamie Moyer defies logic.
The 49-year old pitcher enjoyed a 26-year career in the majors, as he pitched for eight different teams and compiled 267 wins as a starter, with a lifetime 4.24 ERA.
The 201o season was the last time we saw Moyer on the mound, as he appeared in 19 games for the Philadelphia Phillies, earning a 4.84 ERA and a solid 1.10 WHIP in 111.2 innings pitched. Moyer’s contract with the Phillies was not renewed after the 2010 season, and he finished the year with a brief stint in the Dominican League.
Since 2010, the crafty left-hander has been working as an analyst for ESPN, but it’s obvious the itch to pitch never left.
Moyer reported to the Colorado Rockies training camp in Scottsdale, Arizona as a minor league signee and spring training invitee a few days ago. The ultimate irony is that the Rockies didn’t yet exist when the ageless wonder first took to the rubber in 1986.
Does Jamie Moyer have a legitimate chance at pitching for the Rockies this summer? History, and his pure determination would suggest so.
I wouldn’t doubt him.
