Los Angeles Dodgers Bat Boy Francisco Herrera Gets Team Tryout
Jake Roth- US PRESSWIRE

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been on the wrong side of the news in the last year, with the McCourt family ownership debacle, and the persistent search for new owners overshadowing the team.

It appears they have some good news for us this time around.

Long-time Dodgers ball boy Francisco “Chico” Herrera will have his opportunity to play in the Dodgers system as he works out for the team today at an open tryout in Arizona. Don’t assume this is just some random goodwill gesture by the Dodgers, however, Hererra does have a playing history, and according to all, some solid talent.

He plays at Valley College in North Hollywood, California and is the team’s starting shortstop. Herrera’s speed and nice glove have also been noticed by the Dodgers’ coaching staff and players alike as he has “power-shagged” balls in the outfield and made a few highlight-reel catches along the baselines as a ball boy.

Does Chico Herrera have enough talent to make one of the Dodgers’ minor league system teams? They’ll never know until they give him a shot I suppose, so what does Dodgers’ management have to lose?

In the best case scenario, they have discovered the ultimate “diamond in the rough” right under their own noses who could become a bigger part of their organization than they could have ever imagined. In the worst case, they get some positive public relations spin in a time where a downtrodden franchise desperately needs it.

Kudos to the Dodgers for giving Chico Herrera a once-in-a-lifetime shot at his dream, and the same to Herrera for working toward a goal that may have once seemed unattainable.
