San Francisco Giants Player to Watch: Buster Posey

When you consider the San Francisco Giants got less than two months from their best hitter last season, it’s amazing they managed to win 86 games.

Their World Series Championship defense was derailed when catcher Buster Posey was involved in a collision at home plate May 25. The 2010 NL Rookie of the Year broke his fibula and tore ligaments in his ankle.

He made his return to the crouch this week, logging six innings behind the plate over two games. At one point during his rehab, however, there were questions as to whether Posey would ever catch again.

Here’s what Posey told Jorge L. Ortiz of USA Today:

“There were some thoughts a couple of months after (getting hurt) that maybe it wouldn’t be bad to move. But then the more I thought about it, I realized how much I enjoy catching. I want to catch as long as I possibly can.”

Posey, who turns 25 before the start of the season, only has 160 games under his belt. He boasts a .294 average over his career with 22 home runs, 88 RBI and an .815 OPS.

His return could help provide the boost the Giants need to get back on top of the NL West. He’s expected to hit cleanup behind Pablo Sandoval.

One thing San Francisco hopes will carry over from 2011 is their stellar pitching. The Giants ranked second in team ERA with a 3.20 mark and gave up 24 fewer home runs than any team in baseball.

If they can develop even an average offense, the Giants are going to be a virtual lock for a playoff spot, especially now that there’s an extra Wild Card.
