There’s a new owner in the MLB and his name is Magic.  Magic Johnson that is.  According to various outlets, Johnson’s bidding group has won the rights to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two billion dollars.  That is the most money paid for a franchise in the history of professional sports.

Let’s be frank.  The Dodgers need this shot in the arm.  The previous owner’s era left everyone with a sour taste in their mouth.  Getting Magic Johnson and company involved is a breath of fresh air.  Johnson has turned out to be a savvy business man and will help get the franchise turned around.  If not, I will be extremely shocked.

The Dodgers players will no longer have to worry about paychecks and fans will have a reason to come to the ballpark.  The team is freed from the Frank McCourt era and progress can finally begin towards a new successful platform.  They have some nice pieces to build around and the new owners should be able to bankroll the operation.

Then again, Johnson has never owned a sports team.  There will very likely be some hiccups along the way.  However, I think this move will work out in the long run.  It’s outside the box, but there’s nothing wrong with that.  Inside the box hasn’t been working, so try something new.

Rant Sports will have plenty more reaction to this breaking news.  We will bring you reports from Dodgers bloggers and their thoughts on the new ownership group.

Update:  Apparently McCourt will still own the parking lots.  Weird

Wow. RT @molly_knight: OK. So if I'm reading this correctly, McCourt is still going to own the parking lots. Unbelievable.
