Muhammad Ali Was Not Necessary At Miami Marlins Opening Day

The first pitch of the MLB season was ceremonially  thrown out by Muhammad Ali in Miami for the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals game.  I know the Oakland Athletics already played the Seattle Mariners in Japan, but this is the real start on American soil.

Miami kicked off their new home by having boxing legend Muhammad Ali throw out the first pitch.  Well, he didn’t quite throw it, he did the honors of handing the ball to someone who threw the pitch.  Even though he has been ravaged by Parkinson’s, he still inspires many.

But I am not sure how this works out.  It just felt off.  It’s awesome that Ali is still around, but this display was a little bit over the top.  I understand that Miami wants to start things off on the right foot, but why use Ali?  No need to bring him out there.  The ovation was great, but I’m not sure how everyone feels about it.

The Twitter universe is in shock.  It just doesn’t feel right.  None of us want to see Ali in that condition.  This isn’t Ali lighting the Olympic flame.  This is a friggin baseball game.  It almost seems like the put him out there in order to draw attention to the game.  There was no pure meaning behind it.  It seemed staged and forced and I just have a really bad feeling about this whole thing.

Thanks to Jose3030 for the photo.
